COMPETITIONS SOCIETY
WELLINGTON FESTIVAL. A meeting of the Executive Council of the Wellington Competitions Society, presided over by Mr. F. Campbell, was reld this week. The forthcoming festival was discussed and many notable alterations were decided upon. Mr. R. Foster, of Sydney, was appointed vocal adjudicator. Mr. Foster recently made an extensive tour of the world in the interests of his profession. Mr. B. Gibb, of Sydney, and Miss Emery, of Christchurch, was appointed adjudicators of elocution and dancing respectively. An innovation decided upon was a business firm’s choir contest. A similar contest, it was stated, had been eminently successful in Christchurch and Dunedin. The conditions provide for fifteen to twenty-five voices to each choir and may include near relations of members of the staff not actually employed by the firm. The conductor and accompanist may also he outsiders. It was decided to delete several unattractive items and introduce string quartets, country and folk dances, singing games for children, mouth-organ solos, etc.
The opening date was arranged to coincide with the school term holidays.
