GERMAN COALITION

CEASED TO EXIST

NEXT DEVELOPMENT UNCERTAIN (Rec. February 16, 8.15 p.m.) Berlin. February 15. The Coalition ceased to exist, after a meeting at which it was mutually decided that agreement on the Educational Reform Bill was impossible. The next development is uncertain. In view of the extreme desirableness of passing the Budget, it is expected that President Hindenburg will acquiesce in the decision. He has already expressed his willingness to arrange for an election in May. UNFORTUNATE RUPTURE (Rec. February 16, 10 p.m.) Berlin, February 15. From an international standpoint it is. regarded as unfortunate that a domestic quarrel now divides Marx and Dr. Stresemann, who have so admirably collaborated on a policy of reconciliation. But although the Coalition is declared to be dead, the Cabinet is busily drafting a programme which may delay the funeral for a month or two. The Peoples’ Party, indeed, protests that the Education Bill was not the sole reason for the formation of the Coalition, consequently the disbandment is unjustified. The party proceeds to blame the Catholic Centre Party, whose “exaggerated, demands for denominational education would undermine the State’s authority over the schools.” While the situation is delicate, it is considered possible that a general election will not occur before May.
