BRITISH DEBT

4 FURTHER DONATIONS THE NATION’S THANKS (Rec. February 16, 8.55 p.m.) Louden, February 15. Mr. Churchill has received the following letter“Honourable Sir,—Seeing that someone has kindly given half a million to help the debt, I felt I would like to do a bit myself, so am sending ten shillings, as I am only poor.” Mr. Churchill lias publicly expressed the thanks of the nation, and warm appreciation for the patriotism shown. Two Britishers, visitors to Nice, recently won £6OOO at the baccarat tables and telegraphed Mr. Churchill offering to devote a substantial part of the winnings to the national debt. PUBLIC FUND STARTED (Rec. February 16, «.55 p.m.) London, February 16. Besides the ten shillings gift, the Chancellor of the Exchequer gratefully acknowledged a gift of £lOO for debt extinction. Sir Reginald Hall, at a public dinner at Eastbourne last night, hoped a public fund Would be started, and within a few minutes a sum of £5O was subscribed, and a committee formed to carry out the scheme. No doubt if the movement is popularised throughout the country, perhaps even throughout the Empire, a huge sum might be raised. Several critics, however, sec objections to locking up money for fifty or a hundred years.—A.P.A. and “Sun.”
