COMING CONTEST AT TRENTHAM When the South African War came to a close in 1902, the First Battalion of the Gordon Highlanders presented a handsome trophv to the Australian and New Zealand Military Forces in recognition of associations together during the campaign. The trophy is of solid silver and represents a tvpical scene on the African veldt, with a New Zealander, standing beside his charger, conversing with a' private of the Gordon Highlanders. Allocated for competition among Commonwealth and Dominion riflemen, it will be competed lor next week at Trentham bv teams representative of New South Wales, Victoria, and New Zealand, this being the second occasion on which the holders of the cup have been decided in this country. ' Conditions of the gift are that the trophy has to be fired for in the Australian States, Tasmania, and in New Zealand, in rotation, irrespective of who the holders might be, and that teams of eight fire ten shots at 21-inch circular targets, three seconds exposure for each shot. The trophv was first competed for in 1906, when the New South Wales team were the winners. It was won at Randwick bv New Zealand in 1909, and the Dominion repeated their success at Trentham the following year. Tn 1919 the Victorian team were the winners, the trophv being competed for at Perth that vear.' The present holders are the Western Australian team, who won the trophy on the Liverpool range near Svdnev in October last. 'On the trophv is engraved the following ;_“Presented to the military forces o f the Commonwealth of-Australia and the military forces of New Zealand by the First Battalion Gordon Highlanders, in commemmoration of services together in South Africa, 1899-1900-1901-1902.”
