CHAMPION STAVES OFF CHALLENGE ANDERSON BEATS HOGG Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, February 15. The popularity of wrestling in Palmerston Nortli was evidenced by the large attendance at the New Zealand wrestling championship match this evening,” between E. Anderson (champion), of Longburn, and W. Hogg, Waikato, wherein Anderson, gaining the decision bv a fall half-way through the eighth and final round, reversed the decision upon his previous match with Hogg in Palmerston North in 1923. The rounds were each of eight, ten-iuinutes duration, and were thrilling throughout. Mr. J. Colvin was referee of the major bout, while A. Anderson acted in a similar capacity for the preliminary. ~ zlnderson took the mat conceding a stone in weight to Hogg- The wrestlers quickly settled down to business, Anderson having a three-quarter Nelson, which, however, Hogg broke through. Hogg soon after had Anderson in a head scissors, but t.bc champion asserted himself, and broke clear. In the.fall Anderson bad his opponent in difficulties, but Hogg cleared by wriggling off the mat, a trick which he again resorted to in the second round. In this way ho got out of some very awkward predicaments. After being lucky to escape a fall by edging over tho mat, Hogg came, very close -to turning the tables with a wrist lock on Anderson, who, however, succeeded in clearing himself just before the gong. Earlv in the third round a leg and toe hold looked as if it would give Anderson his first fall, but Hogg managed to wriggle clear. The same hold very soon after saw Hogg assume the supremacy, but Anderson extricated himself by, turning a sustained leg and to Hogg lP was cautioned by the referee for punching Anderson early in the fourth round, both wrestlers thereafter settling down in earnest. A wrist lock coupled with a scissors on the head terminated in Hogg tapping the mat and giving Anderson his first tall. Both contestants showed signs of exhaustion in the fifth round and were content to take things easily until Hogg upended Anderson with a body hold Anderson got out of tho difficulty and camo within an ace ot securing his second fall with a body lock. Bis advantage,c however, was Jost, as both champion and challenger fell over the edge of the mat. Anderson had. a half-Nelson on Hogg in the closing stages of the round, but the gong sounded and saved Hogg. ~, , , Anderson went for a leg hold early in the sixth round and, by missing, enabled Hogg to secure a three-quarter-Nelson, which gave Hogg his first fall and make tlio match even, one fall cacti. , , . .
