WORLD’S GOVERNING COUNTRY
ENGLAND’S POSITION FOR YEARS • “AMERICA TRYING TO FEEL FOR THE ROPES” (Rec. February 14, 9.5 p.m.) London, February 13. “It is 100 per cent. American.and 100 per cent. Englishman I fear. I think all 100 per cent, citizens ought to be locked up,” . said Lady Astor, who herself is an American, in the course of a speech at a' luncheon in honour of Abraliam Lincoln. She continued: “America, is very young, very large, very rich, and very bumptious. -I do-.not blame it. When England was very rich she also was very bumptious. We only need to look back to the Elizabethan times. We know that for years England has been the governing’ country of the world. The time has come for another rich, large - country to come in. She naturally is frying to feel for the ropes. I am neither pro-English nor proAmerican. I want to devote my life to securing unity between the Empire and the. United States, the two greatest Christian democracies. It does matter whether America is popular. England has never been popular, but she did not worry, and people who did not like her have come to respect her.”
