THE RACING WORLD

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By

“The Watcher.”)

It was found necessary to destroy Ark Royal, who was kicked at tlie post in the Wellington Cup last month. Since the mishap lie has been in charge ol the Trentham trainer, W. Young. In the spring .Ark Royal defeated Eulalie, in the Dunedin Guineas. He appeared to turn a hit unreliable, but it had been the intention of his owner to geld him, and he might have turned out a very useful handicap horse, for the Kilbroneys improve with age.

C. Goulsbro will ride Joy Bird in the Wanganui Cup. Goulsbro, by the way, has left J. W. Lowe at Trentham, having completed his term of apprenticeship.

'lareria is coining into favour for the Wanganui Cup

Hypanna’s withdrawal from the Wanganui Cup has left some early backers lamenting. No doubt some of the autumn handicaps were more attractive to Air. Kemball than racing his horse confi U.Y on hard tracks under welterv.c ,iits..

The absence of Jlynanna from the Wanganui Cup field reduces it to an evenly balanced lot. Mandane is the only one with pretensions to class. It is not unusual to find such races very hard to pick, much harder than a field of high-class performers. Eden Hall, fourth in the Auckland Cup, and Yoma, are the only two that have tried to win beyond a mile and a half with anv degree of success.

Paganelli to date has not shown partiality for a six furlong journey, but at Auckland on December 28, he carried 8.1, and ran second to Cimabue, 8.3, with Paperchase, 7.10. third. The field was not strong, and the form was quite fair, although Cimabue won by two lengths. Wanganui course is easier to sprinters, as the turn helps them considerably, and it also ends in a short straight. Good beginners well placed, coming into the straight ntWanganui. all hold a big advantage, and Paganelli, although he may not win, should be able to run out six furlongs very well there. The condition of the Trentham trainer, 11. Telford, who is in private hospital at Wellington, where he was operated on last week, showed great improvement yesterday. During Telford’s illness, Jov Bird is being looked after by J. Hughes, who will take her to Wanganui.

Tripaway ran two good races at wingatui for her Oamaru owner, Mr. €). R. Wise, and she has evidently struck form. It is probable she may race at the. Wellington autumn meeting, and wili then bo taken to Ellerslie to contest the Great Northern Oaks.

The dead heat registered by Full Feather is the first Sir George Clifford's colours have ever scored in a race.

Mr. J. A. Ainge. Mr. L. C. Hazlett, and the late Sir George McLean, hold the distinction of being the only Dunedin owners who have won a Dunedin Cup with a horse of their own breeding.

Thorndale would have paid a dividend ia the Jockey Club Handicap at AVinatui, if he escaped the knock he received half way through the race by Satrap, when the latter was rushed past the field last to first in the course of a furlong (says the “Press”). The stewards held an inquiry into the incident, after the race, when D. Cotton admitted that Satrap collided with Thorndale, but said such was accidental, as the horse slipped as he ranged alongside Thorndale. S. Wilson, rider of the latter, said the ground was'very slippery, and considered ’he happening was accidental. The stewards decided to accept the explanations, and no further action was taken.

Prior to the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting last week, Sir George Clifford had won 598 races during his lengthy career as an owner, and as his horses won two races outright, with a dernl heat in another, during the two days of the Wingatui meeting, he has nowpassed the 600 mark.

A notable figure at AVingatui last week was that of Mr. A. S. Smith, who has seen every Dunedin Cup run since Lurlino scored in 1874. Mr. Smith saw Hermit win the Derby, and lias entertained a keen interest in the sport ever since he saw the famous classic decided in 1867.

Night March, who dead-heated with Full Feather at Wingatui on Saturday, is a half-brother by Night Paid to Full Swing and Brightling, and like them was bred by Messrs. Kain Bros. He is built on solid lines, and can be labelled as one of the best of the southern-owned two-year-olds seen out .this season. A successful career as a three-year-old seems in view for him.

There will be a small field at Riccarton next Saturday for the Middle Park Plate, this old-established race having dwindled down to a quartet of two-year-olds. Prior to the Dunedin Champagne Stakes, there seemed a prospect of a good contest, but. Goblin Market disposed of Full Feather so decisively at Wingatui that the victor appears to have the measure ot his rival. Goblin Market may not have matters all his own way, however (says the Christchurch “Star”), as Chide has useful credentials. In the Spring Nursery Handicap, run at Kiccarton in November, Silver Paper won from Silver Bule, with Chide, 7.11, close up third, while Goblin Market, 8.0, was behind them. Goblin Market has improved since then, but against his improvement is the fact that he lias to concede 171 b. to Chide in the Middle Park Plate.

The two-year-old Silver Paper has been sent back to Southland, where he will have a spell for a few months. It is bad luck that leg troubles have necessitated the cancellation of his autumn engagements, as his early form suggested that he would be a candidate tor the highest honours later in the season. It is hoped, however, that he will develop into a high-class three-year-old. \ The stewards of the English Jockey Club recently expressed themselves against (he running of unfit horses. While they were about it, they might have told trainers that when it came to

running a “dead ’un,” heavy shoes were not even as respectable (says “Pilot," in tlie "Referee”). In Australia the stipendiary stewards attend to the latter point, but it is not unusual to see unfit horses raced by some of our so-called “pillars of the turf.” They and their immediate triends may know the horses are not sufficiently forward in condition to win, but that does not prevent some of the public losing on them, in tlie belief that tlieir owners would not countenance starting them unless they thought they had at least a possible chance of success. Unfortunately, owners who should avoid anything to which exception could be taken do not always adopt that course.

In South Africa in December, when Mr: Oliver Davis, secretary of the Durban Turf Club, and his son, Mr. J. Davis, were flying to Johannesburg fertile big meeting, the machine crashed. Mr. Davis was killed, and his son severely injured. The machine was (lying low, owing to Mr. Oliver Davis’s weak heart, and it is believed it struck the top of a frill which was not seen owing to fog.

There is no more popular all-round sportsman in England than Lord Lonsdale. and on the occasion of his golden wedding which will shortly be celebrated, he and the Countess of Lonsdae are to be the recipients of a suitable presentation. It was at first intended to restrict subscriptions to certain sections of the community, but this idea has been disregarded, and, at latest, they were being sent in from other countries, as well as England. Subscriptions are limited to a guinea, and the Earl and Countess have expressed the wish that the fund shall be devoted to the endowment in their names of a hospital or convalescent home for incapacitated sportsmen. That suggestion will be appreciated. Names of all subscribers will be inscribed on the presentation volume. WANGANUI TRACK NOTES By Telegraph.— pmss association. Wanganui, February 14. The weather was again fine for the training operations this morning, witli the promise of a scorching day. Not all the visitors have arrived yet, but the trainers who were at the Taranaki meeting are loud in their praise of the tracks, which have greatly benefited owing Io the heavy shower on 'Sunday morning. Prior to this they ' had been watered for three nights. The I difference was noticeable this morning, when several fast gallons were witnessed. No. 1 grass track was available for fast work. Covent Garden, with a. light-weight, and White Ringlet (Barry) were sent five furlongs, the former doing the better and moving well within himself. The first furlong took 12 3-ssec., the quarter 24 l-ssec., three furlongs 3G 2- and the full -distance was covered in Imin.. 2 l-ssee. Lysander, with a light-weight up, covered six furlongs in Imin. 15 2-ssec. The first furlong took 12 3-ssec., and the next three 36 2-ssec., making him register 49sec. for the half-mile. He is well. Service suffered by comparison when she moved slowly over four furlongs in 56sec. Double Mint, King Mart, and Orbit (from C. Gordon’s stable) were associated in a five-furlong sprint, in which King Mart got all the worst of the start and was alongside Double Mint at the end in Imin. 4 l-ssec. Civility was given her first fast four furlongs, occupying 49 2-ssec. on the journey. The first furlong was covered in 12Jsec. She pulled up well. Damaris finished well ahead of Our Jack and Hallowmoon over six furlongs. The first furlong took 13sec., two furlongs 25 3-ssec., and the half-mile .49 3- Damaris registered Imin. 17sec. for the full journey, with Hallowmoon well back. Marcia went four furlongs by herself in 50 2-ssec., the first furlong taking 12sec. and the second 24sec. After breakfast War Wings and Vexillum were sent over five furlongs, which they covered in Imin. 4 3-ssec., the first furlong taking 13see., the quarter 25 ami three furlongs 37 2-ssec. Limosa and Ironic, both wide out, had a five-furlong task, which the former got through in Imin. 6 3-ssec. Ironic took Imin. 7 3-ssec. The first furlong took 14sec., the first quarter 26 l-ssec., and three'furlongs 38 4-ssec., but Ironic took Imin. 7 3-ssec. Others doing useful work were Tioga Tea Miss, Greengrocer. Ladykiller, Sardine, Paganelli, Davi 1 Garrick, and Jamieson’s team of six. In addition to the sfratchings notified yesterday, Ned Kelly and Wenday were relieved of their engagements at 9 a.m. to-day, at which lime Hymgreat was also scratched. Lethal is another certain non-starter. WANGANUI SCRATCHINGS BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION. Wanganui, February 14.
