MAGISTRATE’S COURT

POLICE CASES Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., dealt with police cases in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. John Allen, a labourer, aged 22, who admitted wilfully breaking a pane of glass valued at 12s. ‘6d., the property of George Popovic, a restaurant keeper, was fined d£l, and ordered to make good the damage, in default fourteen days’ imprisonment. William Roy Smith, a labourer, aged 26, who pleaded guilty to being an idle and disorderly person, in that he had insufficient lawful means of support, was convicted, and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon within three months. Sub-Inspector Lander stated that accused, who was arrested at Petone, was destitute, and had been sleeping out for some time. The Magistrate ordered accused to stay at the Salvation Army Home, Miramar, until he secured employment. "Judging by your list, you are a deliberate idler," said the Magistrate to Matthew Boyd, a labourer, aged 59, who was charged with being a rogue and a vagabond. Accused, who had eleven previous convictions, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour. William Moss, a labourer,. aged 18, pleaded guilty to stealing JCI in money, the property of Howard Ashmore, and to the theft of a ticket puncher, a pair of white trousers, and a white coat, valued in all at dE3, belonging to the Ritz Cafe, Ltd. Chief Detective Ward stated softer accused had left the cafe, where ho had been employed, he secured employment in a grocer’s shop, where he stole Al after working for a few days under an assumed name. He then found a position in a house in Kelburn, but was dismissed for theft. "These are mean thefts," said the Magistrate, but as you are under the age of 19, I can give you a chance. If you slip, again, however, there will be no alternative but to send you to rail.” Accused, who had never previously been before the Court, was placed oh probation for twelve months. He was ordered to make restitution of the Al stolen, and to go and live with his father at Karori.
