[MR. JUSTICE BLAIR “BACKS WRONG HORSE” B2 TELEGHAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION. Auckland, February 13. “There is nu such thing is synthetic work. You cannot get on in the world without good honest effort, and I hope in giving you two years’ probation you will show that I have not backed the wrong horse,” said Air. Justice Blair in sentencing Boe Griffiths (alias George Rae), one of his first prisoners, on Saturday morning. However, Griffiths was not many hours in proving to the Judge that he had backed a loser, for by midnight on Saturday he was again in custody. This morning Griffiths was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment by the Alagistrate, Air. F. K. Hunt, for stealing an attache ease and contents, valued at 355. and 425. 7d. in money, from Henry Sidney Tasker. Tasker was in the city on holiday from Alorrinsville, and the offence occurred after 11. o’clock on Saturday night. Griffiths had offered to get Tasker accommodation, and got £1 from him to pay for a room and 225. 7d. to procure liquor. Accused then asked Tasker for £lO, and when met with a refusal, seized the attache case from the visitor’s hand and ran down the street. Tasker chased and caught Griffiths, who threatened to strike his captor. lie succeeded in getting free, but was subsequently secured by a '-onstable. At (he police station Griffiths said to Tasker: “Here’s £L back, and if you don’t go against me, I will give you the rest in the morning.”
