RESULTS FROM TARANAKI, DUNEDIN, ROTORUA, AND POVERTY BAY

At Dunedin the handicaps- went to Sudden Storm arid Queen Balboa, while Limerick, making his first appearance since the spring, easily won the Hazlett Plate. At Rotorua Corinax won the Cup.
TARANAKI MEETING STAKES WON BY THE HAWK TIEGA SECURES PAUL MEMORIAL Dominion Special Service. New Plymouth, February 11. At tho Taranaki meeting, which concluded hero to-day, bettors received further reverses, tho chief of them through the defeat of Reremoana in the Stakes. Tiega won the Paul Memorial nicely from tho favourite, Eden Hall, and High Finance won tho sprint from Kiosk in an oven betting race. The course was in good order, but rather hard. The totalisator handled <£21,137, compared with X'22,720 on the corresponding day last year. Tho total for (he meeting was .£4O,BSD, against T 42.500 last year, a decrease of .£lB2O. OKUKE HURDLES. MOKAU HANDICAP. Tho public wenfheavily for The Swell in the Mokau Handicap, but Flying Shot, the other representative of P. Johnson’s stable won, and paid a good price. Flying Shot was in front along ’the back, with The Swell shut in and Sovcna well back. Flying Shot led into tho straight, but .Sovena finished doggedly, and Flying Shot got homo by only a head. Always was two lengths back, and then came Miss Mercia fourth and The Swell fifth. STE WA It DS’ HAN DICAP. The Stewards' Handicap was another good betting race, but Kiosk was a really definite favourite. Lady Cavendish and High Finance were the early leaders but Kiosk ran into second place on tho High School bend, and was close to High Finance at tho entrance to the straight, with Tip Tree also showing up. Kiosk had to pull outside High Finance, but he finished fast and crossed the line on terms with his opponent. The judge's decision went to High Finance., Oration, who was unlucky in the running, was three lengths away third, with Sarchee aud Tip Tree following. TARANAKI STAKES. . There was a great boil-over in the Taranaki Stakes. Reremoana was a warm favourite, but The Hawk, finely ridden, beat him by a neck in a thrilling finish. Te Atiawa led to the straight, where Reed shot The Hawk to the front, and Reremoana attempted to go up between tho two, but found the way blocked, and his rider had to change his course. Amidst great excitement, Reed kept The Hawk going to win by a neck. Te Atiawa was three lengths away. Reremoana was a certainty defeated. PAUL MEMORIAL. Eden Hall was a sound favourite for the Paul Memorial, but went under byhalf a length to Tiega. Along the back Wenday and Manly led. .from Tiega, Orazone, Eden Hall and Yoma. with Transformer last. Wenday led into the straight from Tiega, with Eden Hall, Yonui, and Manly next. Tiega soon drew clear and, although Eden Hall finished well, he could not get nearer than half a length to him. Transformer came from the back to finish third a length away, while Orazone, Wenday. Yoma and Manly finished in that order.
URFNUI FLECTRIC HANDICAP. Yawl led all the way in the Urenui Electric Hack Handicap and won by a length aud a half from Resinous, with Cadenza a similar distance away third aud Mollali a poor fourth.
PARITUTU JUVENILE HANDICAP. Miss Ransom was backed to odds-on in tho Juvenile -Handicap, and after being in front at the turn along with Gold Dawn was beaten by a neck by Tea Miss, who camo on tho outer with a fine lato run. Gold Dawn was half a length back third, and Callapat fourth-
OMATA HANDICAP. All tho six starters except Patrolet were well backed for the Omala Hack Handicap, which carried one of the best pools of the meeting. In a great finish Paul Lucerne won by a head from Onward, with Mendip and Dimmer next. Gold Dawn and Farndon dropped out of the Oniata Hack Handicap, but live out of tho six runners were heavily supported, Ned Kelly being favourite. Ned Kelly led from Dimmer and Paul Lucerne along the back, but Paul Lucerne ran into second place before turning for home, and Onward also closed up. Ned Kelly was beaten at Hie distance, leaving Paul Lucerne and Onward lo fight if out, Paul Lueerno winning by a head. Mendip was a length away third, followed by Dimmer, Nod Kelly, and Patrolct. ROTORUA MEETING CORINAX WINS THE CUP TOURIST HANDICAP TO PRINCE OTTO Dominion Special Service. Rotorua, February 11. A. big crowd attended the opening of the Rotorua Racine- Club s annual meeting at Arawa Park on Saturday, and some first-class lacing was seen, the first race and last Ijeing exceptions. Corinax showed good staying form iu winning the Cup from Gala Day. His rider had to hit him with the whip half a mile from home, when ho showed that he had been loafing. He is a good prospect for later big handicaps. The lotalisator showed an increase of £3G24 10s., tho figures being .£22,318 IDs against X'18,721 last year. POHUTU HANDICAP. Dress Circle was a surprise favourite over Pckatahi in the Poliutu Highweight Handicap. Day Abbey aud Master Lu made the early running Iron; Dress Circle, tho latter being allowed a run .through on the rails at the hjick, and led round the turn to win comfortably from Wiltshire, with Lady Spalpeen, Master Lu, and Pckatahi iu order next. , , , Dress Circle won easily, but he was very fortunate in tho running, and one or two of the beaten division covered a lot of ground. HOT SPRINGS HANDICAP. La. Roma and Palmares were both heavily backed in the Hot Springs Handicap.” Young Pretender was first out, but La Roma ran to tho front at the back, and was well clear at the turn from Young Pretender, Bright Comet, Leitrim, and Cybele, and went 011 to win very easily bv 'two lengths-from Young Pretender, with Bright Comet third and Colenetla, Cybele, and Miss Myrtle next. Cybele lost her rider after passing the post but he escaped unhurt. . , La Roma won in impressive style, and Young Pretender is also improving. Palmares drew wide out. and never threatened. MOKOIA HANDICAP. There was little between Macroom and Archeen in the betting on the Mokoia. Handicap. Quincoma got the best of the start, but Prince Lu was in front al the back, where Archeen ran up second, aud turning tor home, 1 nnco Lu Archeen, Macroom, and Quincoma were in close order, Archeen drawing orat in (he straight to win by a length from Quincoma. with New Moon less than a length awav thud, and Prince Lu and Macroom next. Archeen won nicely, but Quincoma may have beaten him had his rider taken full advantage of his good start New Moon’s rider showed little judgment and was chopped back on 4 wo occasions. Ho will go better when better ridden. Queen Arch lost her rider (Davey) at the end of two furlongs, and lie was taken to hospital. ROTORUA CUP. The Rotorua Cup was an oven belting race with Le Choucas tho prime fancy. It requires little description, as Gabi Dav ami Corinax were always the leading pair, and halt a mile trim l ome they cleared out from the field and in a pvft. ishing finish, Corinax defeated Gala Day by a neck. Siaosi ran on well to get close third, but Le Choucas and Seat headed a strung-out lot. ikt the finish Corinax showed that he is‘a good sticker, and Gala Day a so is back to form. Alonsoa, Scat, and Lo Choucas were all disappointing, but Le Choucas did best of tho beaten lot, and he will be harder to beat on Monday.
WAJMANGU STAKES. Winnington was a hot favourite for fliu Wainmngu Stakes. She and Harvest Dav moved first, Winningion going out to 'put a clear lead on the field, liangikokiH and Venns Abbey followed tier into the straight. Rangikokiri finished well and tho favourite had to bo shaken up to win by half a length, with
Venus Abbey two lengths away third, and The Dansaut, Dainty Manners, aud lied Day uext. It was a poor field, and the winner at present is nothing out of the ordinary, f ellow Bonnet is wayward at the barrier, and was left behind. GEYSER HACK HANDICAP. Cynthia N was another short-priced iavourite in the Geyser Hack. Ripon Abbey and Wliaka King made all the riming, the latter leading into the straight from Cynthia N, Ripon Abbey, and Tho Lover. At tho distance Cynthia N and Tho Lover were fighting it out. when Micrometer dashed up on the rails an.', won well by a length from Cynthia N, who beat Tin- Lover by a head, Wliaka King and Abbey Day being next. Cynthia N was drawn wide and had to cover a lot of ground early, but against Hi is Micrometer ami The Lover each received bad passages, Micrometer being last three furlongs from home. TOURIST HANDICAP. Hiving Juliet was a better fancy Hum Dave for tho Tourist Handicap. Ballymoy 11 was first out and led to the back, where Prince Olio went out clear, and lie led round the turn from Dave and Bnllymoy IL with Flying Juliet next. In a” great race home Prince Otto stayed on to boat Flying Juliet by half a head, with Dave a Imml away third, and Ballvnioy IT next. Flying Juliet dropped back in tho middle stages, but she got a lucky run on the rails at the finTho winner has a fine turn of speed, and Dave ran his usual true race and would have won had he made the home turn a little better. ARAWA PARK HANDICAP. Te Korokc was a little better backed than Matinee for the Arawa Park Handicap. Matinee was cut out at the start-, and at the back Muscari was well clear of Clarus anil To Koroko. The latter ran up second al, tho turn and came on to beat Muscari by a length. Matinee. who was not handled in the best manner, did well to get third a length away. His rider ran into unnecessary trouble on two occasions, and lost many ’ lengths. DETAILS OF THE RACING UY TBLEGEAPD.—PRESS ASSOCIATION. Rotorua, February 11. REVIEW OF THE FIELDS Dominion Special Service. Rotorua, February 12. Good acceptances have been received tor tho second day’s racing nt Rotorua, aud the fields, with 0110 or two exceptions, should keep up well. The weather remains fine, and another successful day’s racing is promised. Dave wrenched a shoulder aud that accounts for his absence. _ To-morrow s racing will open with the Tarawera High-weight, in which Wiltshire aud Lady Spalpeen should lie backed on tho first day’s running. Young Pretender should bo a sound favourite for tho Blectric Handicap, iu
which,■tho rather erratic Cybele may also be iu demand. Corinax will bo favourite for the Ohiuemiitu Hack Cup, if started, and in his absence Cynthia N aud Laroma may be public iancies. The President’s Handicap has drawn a fine field, and in a very open race Flying Juliet, Gala Day, and Le Choucas may be the trio to supply the favourite. In a small field for the Rennie Handicap, backers may stick to form, and favour To Koroke and Quincoma. In tho probable absence of Flying Juliet in the Borough Handicap, Prince Otto and Bailyinoy 11 will be in most demand, and the latter should improve wjth her first day’s race. The Flying Stakes field is a poor one. Palmares does not seem too solid, but he and Rangi Kokiri look the best of a poor lot. Another useful field will contest the Farewell Haiidieap. ami. if started, Corinax and New Moon will bo the popular fancies.
DUNEDIN MEETING LIMERICK WINS HAZLETT MEMORIAL QUEEN BALBOA’S JOCKEY CLUB HANDICAP Dominion Special Service. Dunedin, February 11. The second day of the autumn meeting was favoured with fine weather, and there was again a large attendance. The track was in splendid order, rain during the night having taken much of Thursday’s sting out of the "round. The totalisator handled £26,172 for the day, compared with £31,161 10s. for the second day last year, making the total for the meeting .£50,280 10s., compared with £58,000 last year. OWHIRO HANDICAP. Jack o’ Lantern was the medium of strong speculation in the Owhiro Hurdle Handicap. The field was quickly dispatched and Jack o’ Lantern got away well. Beauty Light and Red Heather led the favourite over the first two fences, and then Jack o’ Lantern joined Red Heather, and this pair were racing abreast approaching the far turn. Beauty Light was on terms with them at the second to last fence, and as the straight was entered had a length s advantage from Jack o’ Lantern, with Red Heather beaten off. Beauty Light had the race in hand once over the last obstacle and won in easy fashion by six lengths. Red Heather was eight lengths away third, well clear of Coastguard and Koauau. Relic fell at the last fence and his ridpr, C. Rask, received a severe shaking. Beauty Light was sold by F. Shaw to his present owner on Friday for £5O, but ho still remains in Shaw's stable. Jack o’ Lantern was considered unbeatable if he left the mark, but he gave a disappointing display over the finishing stages. Koauau was always a long way from the lenders and showed no glimpse of his first day’s finishing effort.
WARRINGTON HANDICAP. King Balboa carried three hundred tickets more than were entrusted to Luminant in the Warrington Handicap, while there was also good support for Rotor. Ths last named stumbled badly when the tapes were released and was last to move off. King Balboa, Luminant and Lady McKenna were early prominent, and Luminant held an advantage over King Balboa as he entered. the straight. Luminant left the field commencing the run home and recorded an easy victory by four lengths from Rotor, who came from the back and beat Money Peer by three-quarters of a length for second money. King Balboa was a moderate fourth, with Felony next. Luminant showed improved form and her task was an easy one. Rotor was the only, contestant that would have troubled her if ho had enjoyed a favourable passage. Besides falling on his nose at the post. he was interfered with halfway through the race and had all but one of the field in front of him at the straight entrance.
JOCKEY CLUB HANDICAP. Stormy was the only withdrawal from the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap, and in a moderate pool Satrap was made a staunch favourite, but again he failed to move off with the field and was tailed off about a dozen lengths from the leaders after two furlongs had been covered. After the field settled down Queen Balboa and Arikiwai had charge from Heather Lad and Thorndale, with Countersign, and Satrap last. Along the back Arikiwai assumed control from Queen Balboa, Nincompoop, and Thorndale, with Satrap moving up fast. At the far turn Arikiwai was still in charge and led Satrap, Queen Balboa, Thorndale, and Countersign to the home turn, where he retired from the contest, and Countersign and Thorndale were together in front of Satrap, Queen Balboa and Front Rank as the straight was entered. Half way down the running, Queen Balboa made a forward move, and Front Rank also made a promising run on the outside. Countersign and Thorndale weakened in the concluding run to the post, and Queen Balboa, under pressure, secured the victory by half a length from Front Rank, who finished strongly and beat Countersign by a neck. Thorndale was half a length away next in front of a spread-out field, headed by Satrap and Nincompoop. The race was not a spectacular one, and several of the contestants seemed to be troubled by .the slippery ground. The winner won on her merits, but at the 'same time Front Bank was unlucky to be beaten, as she did not get too clear a run from the top of the straight, and was putting in some telling work at the post. Countersign was again slow over the early stages, but was in front a hundred yards off the post. It was only in the last few strides that she submitted to defeat. Thorndale ran a solid race throughout, but lost, ground five furlongs from home by receiving a bump from Satrap. Arikiwai showed a lot of paca for most of the journey, but in his case also his chance was jeopardised by slipping at a critical stage and quickly retiring. Satrap made up his ground in a remarkable fashion, as after being several lengths away from the leaders he was the actual leader three furlongs from home. That effort had its effect, as he was done with in the run home. Nincompoop ran disappointingly, and finished a long way back. FLYING HANDICAP. The Flying Handicap provided an easy' triumph for the Cbokebore filly, Sudden Storm, who was made a few tickets’ better favourite than Booster. Good as Gold piloted the field from the dispatch, and at the far turn had opened up an appreciable gap from Money Mine, Sudden Storm, and Circulation, with Stormy and Booster next. . Sudden Storm followed Good as Gold into the straight, but at the distance post she had the leader beaten, and coming away, won with ease by four lengths. Circulation was two lengths away third, with Stormy. Booster, Solrose, and Money Mine following in that order.
HOPEFUL HANDICAP. Rin Tin Tin was selected as the best proposition in the two-year-old race, the
Hopeful Handicap, carrying close on five hundred tickets more limn were invested in Full Feather. Rin Tin lin was the first to show out from a good start, and at the far turn had a ,9 , a , r advantage from Wine Tray, Nightmarch, and Full Feather. Wine Iray was first into the straight trom the favourite, who, however, compounded commencing the run home. Full Feather took charge at the distance post, and appeared a certain winner, but Nightmarch came with a rush on the rails and got up in time to make a dead heat with Full Feather. Red Sea finished on better than the remainder, and was half a length away in third place. Wine Tray, Money Mint, Dumblane, and Rin Tin Tin finished in that order. Full Feather's rider was caught unawares when Nightmnrch came through on the rails, as his mount was going easilv at the time, and Ellis had practically stopped riding him.
WAIHOLA HANDICAP. Skyquest, Spearmaid, and Tripaway accounted for most of the betting in the Waihola Handicap, and the trio filled the places Carinthia was the first to show out from the barrier, and led for two furlongs, but Skyquest and Quicktoini then took charge, and piloted Rhondda, Tripaway, and Spearmaid into the straight. A stirring finish ensued between Skyquest, Tripaway, and Spearmaid, the last-named finishing resolutely to gain the decision by half a length from Tripaway, who beat Skyquest by a similar margin for second honours. Quickfi in, Tractor, and Rhondda were the next to finish.
HAZLETT MEMORIAL. . There was very little speculation on the machine for the Hazlett Memorial Handicap, £335 being the total, as against £3238 for the same race last year. The contest requires very little description, as Limerick went to the front from Nincompoop and Countersign after three furlongs bad been traversed, and iron; that to the post bowled along freely in front, and won in easy style by a good length. Countersign finished better tnaii Nincompoop, and beat him by font lengths. The sectional times were as follow : First furlong, Msec.; two furlongs, 26 l-ssec.; three furlongs, 38 3-sr.ee.; four furlongs, 51 2-ssec.; five furlongs, Imin. 5 2-ssec.; six furlongs, Imm. 19scc.; full distance. Imin. 44 l-ssec.
ABBOTSFORD HANDICAP. The meetin" concluded with the Abbotsford Handicap. Gay Sonnet and Wingatui closely contested the favour) tism. Bright Mark was in charge from Schott ische, Lucy Locket. Wayward, and Black Duke at the far turn, and there was little change as the straight was entered. Lucy Locket was in front inside, the distance, but Wingatui, with a wellsustained run, wore the leader down, and won attractively by a length. Black Duke was two lengths away in third place, followed by Gay Sonnet, Wayward, Schottischa, and Bright Mark.
