MODEL DAIRY FACTORY
CITY COUNCIL TO VISIT OTAKI As far as is known, the Rahui dairv factory at Otaki is the only municipal dairy factory in the world, so that it should have a curious attraction to all visitors, particularly those who are interested in municipal undertakings which immediately affect the daily welfare of the people. Wellington is the only city of any size or importance in this part of the world, which controls the milk supply of its ratepavers and the [ublic generally. Many difficulties were encountered seven vears ago in instituting the system of supplying cleanlyprepared and pasteurised milk to the public, an action that was forced upon the City. Council by the instances of adulteration that were being aired in the courts under the old system. These troubles lasted a few vears, but eventually the council, through its Milk Committee, won the regard and confidence of the milk suppliers of the district, until at present the system runs very smoothly and satisfactorily, and is of great interest to other municipal authorities,, where it is considered that the introduction of a similar system would be beneficial to the general ci iiirninitv.
The City Council, to secure the good offices of the suppliers of the district, took over the Raimi factory at Otaki, and it is there that any ’ surplus of milk is turned into butter as the occasion arises. Recently it was found necessary to enlarge this factory. This work has been completed, and tc-rror-row the members of the council ate to visit Otaki to witness the manner in which its money has been snent.
