CHAMPIONSHIP ATHLETICS
WELLINGTON PROVINCIAL MEETING
J. STANDENS GREAT PERFORMANCE
M C VILLY SHIELD WON BY WELLINGTON CLUB
A crowd of 3500 at Athletic Park on Saturday afternoon, and of 5000 at the Basin Reserve on Saturday night, saw the Wellington Provincial Amateur Athletic Championships decided and the Wellington Club win the McVilly Shield, with almost twice as many shield points as the next competing club. A day’s strenuous sport left the shield points as follow: Wellington 901, ’Varsity 49J, Wairarapa 321, Manawatu 12, Scottish Harriers 4, Athletic 3, Kiwi 3, Napier 3, Hutt Valley 3, Hastings 3, Selwyn 1.
W. Lankey, of Manawatn, easily won the three-mile walk in time l-ssec. outside his performance last year, and later took thp mile walk title without difficulty. Easy victories were gained by C. 11. Jenkins in the 100 yards, and by 11. Leech in the 880 yards championship. In the 220 yards championship Jenkins gained a second win, leading all the way, and from the front, making the good time of 22 l-ssec. The 410 yards hurdles saw a great finish between F. S. Ramson and R. AV. Lander, the latter catching Ramson just at the tape, and a head-beat being declared. The time was the excellent one of 58 l-ssec. S. Andrews, the young Hutt Valley runner hung to G. Bayne, and worried him in the three miles. Bayne came away with a great burst of speed at the finish, but Andrews ran a fine race. The inter-club relay championship provided a great race. In the opening 880 Priestley (’ Varsity) established a lead of a yard from Leech of Wellington), who clung to him well, and C. B. Allan, running a nice quarter-mile, . added four yards to the lead with which he began, distancing Cole. J. Smith doubled this distance, and good baton-changing saw K. Eastwood sent away about fifteen yards ahead of C. H. Jenkins, who, with a great burst of speed, regained ten of the lost, yards, coming in a good second to the flying Eastwood. A good win was gained in the 440 yards championship, when C. B. Allan just beat J. T. Fleming at the tape after a hard race, in which J. Cunningham made most of the running. In the mile championship R. A. Anderson made a desperate effort to reach hi s clubmate. A. D. Priestley, but fell short of him by five yards, after a strong run.
As was anticipated, the two New South Wales cyclists, J. Standen and D. Gray, did many good things. Standen won the half-mile and the mile. championships, and the mile scratch invitation race, and was lying well in the three miles when he was struck by another competitor, and had a wheel injured. This event was won by Gray, who was plainly nervous of the grass tracks, after the falls which he has suffered. Detailed results follow: — CHAMPIONSHIPS THREE MILES WALK. W. Lankey (Man.) 1 W.
