AGES OF THE PEOPLE
NEW ZEALAND-BORN POPULATION WHAT THE CENSUS REVEALS Persons born in the Dominion now form over three-fourths of the population (exclusive of Maoris), according to details supplied by the Government Statistician in the latest Abstract of Statistics. According to the last census the percentage of native-born was:— Males, 73.32; females, 77.51; both sexes, 75.37. Prior to 1840 the nativeborn element was practically nil; by 1886 it had risen to 52.08 per cent, of the population, and by 1906 to 68.26 per cent. If Maoris be included, the New Zealand-born were recorded as 1,055,000, or 76.51 per cent. The 1926 census returns also show a continuance of the upward movement in the age-constitution of the population (exclusive of Maoris). Average ages for males and females in 1926 were 29.42 years and 29.03 years respectively. Similar figures for 1921 were 28.93 years and 28.11 years respectively The adult population was 795,071, comprising 59.11 per cent, of the whole.
A serviceable measure of the net gain to population through immigration is afforded by the appended figures showing the duration of residence in New Zealand of those born overseas:—
