LAWN TENNIS

FRANCO-AUSTRALIAN TESTS VISITORS BEATEN IN DOUBLES Melbourne, February 10. In the lawn tennis tests between France and Australia, in the doubles Patterson and O’Hara Wood beat Borotra and Boussus, 6 —4, 6 —2. Some bright tennis was seen in the doubles match between Borotra and Boussus and Patterson and’ O’Hara Wood. Borotra was the outstanding player, with Wood very close behind him. Patterson had a tendency to take his drives too low, and frequently found the net. Boussus, until near the end of the second set, did not hud his feet. He seemed nonplussed by the speed of the play, and mistimed a lot of his volleys. . Boussus played on the right-hand side of the court, anti the Australians were not long in finding the weakness of his backhand. Patterson served consistently to that corner, and even when Boussu? was able to return his delivery, it was generally weak, leaving too much of the court open. . [Surprise was occasioned during the matches in Wellington at Borotra putting Boussus, who is a Jef-hander, in the right court, as all shots to that line he has to play with his backhand. What is a right-handed player’s backhand court is, of course, Boussus’s forehand. Many players entertain the idea that partners, during a set, may change sides, so that each plays in the other’s court in alternate games. Changing is not allowed by the rules. Whatever side of their/ court the players in a doubles take they must Jceep to throughout the set.—“ Forehand. J ST. PETER’S CLUB.
