TROTTING
FIXTURES. Feb. 11. —N.Z. Metropolitan T.C. Summer Feb. 16 —Clifden R.C. (two events;. Feb. 18, 22— Olahuhu T.C. Feb. 22, 23.—Core R.C. Summer (two events each day}. Feb. 25.—Greymouth T.C. Autumn. Feb. 25.—Kaikoura T.C. Annual. Feb. 27.—Inangahua T.C. While the principal interest in the New Zealand Alertopolitan Club's meeting', which is being held at Addington to-day, is centred in the match between Great Bingen and Native Chief, the acceptances are such as to ensure an entertaining day’s racing, quite apart from the big event.
Proceedings will commence with the Spreydon Handicap, several of the runners in which have recent winning form to their credit. Nelson Bell and Nelson Boy are on scratch, and of the pair the latter may do best. Of Sarsaparilla and Swiltbine, the latter is probably the fastest, but against this is the fact that he Ts such an uncertain customer. Still h.s may do very well. Of the 38yd. division Wild Hebo appeals most, while of the remainder Nourmahal may have the best prospects. The judge may have to decide between Swiftbine, Nelson Boy, and Wild Hebo. Seventeen are engaged in the Linwood Handicap, a mile saddle event. 2.16 elass. Sahib is unreliable, while Pointa-
lena cannot do quite 2.16—0 r at least has so far failed to do it this season. A likely trio on the front mark are I'irpo, Locanda General, and Kulnine, and of these the last-named may do best. Omaha is a good beginner and, with Jean McElwyn, may have a hand in the decision of the race. Doctor Dillon ran a very good race in the Final Handicap at Canterbury Park in January, and provided he goes as well on this occasion should be in the moneyj Kulnine, Doctor Dillon, and Jean McElwyn may catch the eye at the finish.
The big two mile race, the Midsummer Handicap, comes next, and it bears a very open appearance. The three on scratch, Harry Audubon, William the Great, and Billy Sea, have a hard task, but William the Great is sure to go a good race for the greater part of the journey. Southern critics are selecting St. Maura to win a big two mile race, but I will be surprised if it is this one. Trimmer, Peter Swift, and Shine Soon do not take the eye, but the last-named may show up. Trampfast ran an excellent race when he finished second to Logan Park in the Canterbury Handicap, but he did not race so well at Forbury. Possibly he is a bit stale. Pan Yan is nicely in on a 4.30 mark, as he registered 4.27 2-5 when he finished second to Pluto in the Ashburton Trotting Cup. He also ran a good race when he finished second to Dalnahine in the Park Handicap at Christchurch on January 3. If he could improve just a little on his handicap he would be extremely hard to beat. Fight Ever needs to show a return to form before he can he recommended. Now we come to Machine Gun and Author Jinks, and notwithstanding the excellent reports heard concerning the former, I lean to the four-year-old. of whom we have not yet seen the best by a good hit. Acron is too unreliable. Wnitaki Girl is on 4.25, whereas her best time is 4.22. but she may not put un such time again. Jewel Pointer should go well, and will thoroughly deserve the stake if he can beat the field from the mark he is on. All things considered. Author Jinks, Pan Yan, and Waitaki Girl may do best, though the chances of the lastnamed would appeal more if the going was heavy.
Of the three limit horses in the Papanui Handicap Quality may prove the best, but I am doubtful whether she will be able to account for either Coleus Pointer or Jackie Audubon at a difference of only 12 yards. Ariki appeals most of the 24 yards division, while King Pointer is preferred of the three on the back mark. It will be remembered that he did very well at Auckland at Christmas time, ami as he is only a five-year-old he should be on the up-grade all the time. The three that may do best are Jackie Audubon, Colene Pointer, and King Pointer.
The Cashmere Handicap will find the straightest trotters in action again, and on the running in the Crescent Handicap at Forbury Park Duke Bingen, Cannonball, and Little Logan should give a good account of themselves. Two horses that did not compete at Forbury, viz., Wild I-lebe and ’Frisco Beau, have, however, to be taken into consideration. The first -named is engaged in the first race, and a line as to his chances may be secured as a result of that event. ’Frisco Beau has no earlier engagement, and of the two may do best. She won the Avon Handicap at Addington in August tn 4.4!) 2-5. the margin in her favour being three lengths, and I am prepared to see her
equal or better that time. Cannonball and Duke Bingen may be the hardest pair for her to beat. The Juvenile Handicap promises to be a very interesting race, and Rose Marie, Don Derby, Pet Locanda, and Great Triumph should all be well to the fore at the finish. Hose Marie is from a good stable, and in some quarters the feeling exists that she has been prepared for this particular race. Don Derby has already shown winning form, and the same remark applies to Great Triumph, who won at the recent Cheviot meeting, and Pet Locanda, who was successful at Greymouth, where she won by six lengths, covering twelve furlongs and a half in 3.43. Rose Marie started, hut did not run into a place. With the handicap in his favour, Don Derby should go particularly well, and Pet Locanda and Great Triumph should also run well forward. There is every probability that luck will play a prominent part in the decision of the Liverpool Handicap, for in a field of 24 something is sure to be shut in or bo interfered with in some way. Those on the front should have the best prospects of securing a decent run, and having this in their favour Kreisler and Searchlight Lad look like playing their part well. The most likely pair on 12 yards appear to be Mae Dillon and Sarella. The latter is a good stayer, and ran an excellent race at Addington in January. Of the remainder Chimer appeals the most. Those behind 24 yards are likely to have to cover a good deal of extra ground, and so are passed by, but it is of course possible that one may get a lucky run and trouble those in
front. Kreisler, Sarella and Searchlight Lad may be in the limelight at the finish. The meeting will conclude with the Craven Plate, in which Black Admiral, Sea Pearl, and Queen’s Own should go well, though there are others with undeniably good chalices in view of the tact that the majority are separated by only 24 yards. The match between Great Bingen and Native Chief will take place after the fourth race,, and will be run about 2.30. Since my last notes appeared I have read that some trainers made the latter’s time 2.4 for the mile that he was reported to have gone in 2.2. Be that as it may, 1 believe that he will prove the winner of the match, though the . margin in his favour at the finish may not be great. May the best horse win is, I am sure, the wish of all of us. Nominations for all events for the Manawatu Trotting Club’s annual meeting close with the Secretary, Box 393, Palmerston North, on Saturday, February 18, at 6 p.m.
