U.S. PRESIDENCY
QUESTION OF THIRD TERMS COOLIDGE “LEFT DOOR AJAR” Washington, February 8. A debate was precipitated in the United States Senate to-day on the La Follette resolution prohibiting Presidential third terms. There was no unanimity among senators, irrespective of partv, as to whether President Coolidge could be drafted, in view of his statements that he was not a candidate. Senator Gillette indicated that he believed President Coolidge had withdrawn, but he also opposed the resolution. Senator Bruce said that President Coolidge “had left the door slightly ajar.” LOWDEN’S CANDIDACY Chicago, February 8. Governor Lowden, of Illinois, is officially a candidate for the Republican Presidential nomination, having filed a petition in Illinois for a place in the ballot. Although it had been definitely known before that Governor Lowden considered himself a candidate, this marks the beginning of an active effort to obtain votes.
