Mr. J. S. Dickson, M.P., returned to Auckland after a visit to Wellington last night. Major-General J. A. Douglas, C.M.G., C.1.E., retired, is an English visitor at present in Wellington. Arriving about a month ago, he has been fishing at Rotorua and Taupo. Accompanied by Mrs. Douglas, he intends to leave for the South Island shortly, and will leave New Zealand on March 13. Sir Thomas Mackenzie arrived from the South yesterday morning on a visit to Wellington. Sir Donald McGavin has been appointed a member of the Medical Council under the Medical Practitioners Act, 1914.

The Hon. W. Bennett, M.L.A., of New South Wales, arrived in Wellington yesterday. Mr. Bennett, who is a newspaper proprietor, was born at Petone, and is now touring the land of his birth.

A Press Association cablegram from Rome states that Cardinal Cerretti is ill, suffering from erysipelas.

Councillors H. D. Bennett and T., C. Hislop were appointed by the City Council last night to represent the city at the Municipal Conference to be held at Nelson next month.

Major-General Young, after inspecting the Hawke’s Bay Regiment at Waipukurau, joined the Limited express at Palmerston North last night to proceed to Ngaruawaßia, where he will inspect the First Battalion, Auckland Regiment. Mr. F. N. Thompson, the new assistant city engineer, attended a meeting of the City Council for the first lime last night.

The sudden death of the Hon. W. N. Gillies, formerly Premier of Queensland, is announced by a Press Association message from Brisbane.

Mr. C. J. B. Norwood, late Mayor of Wellington, and managing director of Dominion Motor Vehicles, Ltd., with Mrs. Norwood and family, will leave on a trip to America and England by the Makura on March 29 During the time Mr. Norwood is engaged on business in the Eastern States, Mrs. and the Misses Norwood will remain ill California, subsequently leaving t o rejoin Mr. Norwood in New York. Later they will tour England and the Continent, returning by way of Suez and Australia.

News lias been received m Wellington of the death in Sydney of Dr. David Burt, fourth son of the late Mr. Alexander Burt, of Dunedin, and a brother of Mr. Thomas Burt, of A. and T. Burt, of Wellington The late Dr. Burt, who was 56 years of age, was an eye, ear, nose, and throat specialist, who graduated at the Otago University, and took bis degree in Edinburgh, Scotland. He practised in Sydney for some years. <»r. Burt leaves a widow and two sons.

French, English, German, and Italian specialists have attended him, and they still hope his sight may eventually be restored..
