ALLEGED THEFT
BANK CLERK CHARGED. When Chief-Detective Ward asked for a remand until February 15 in the Magistrate's Court yesterday in the case of Walter Hedley Huthnance, a bank clerk, aged 20, who appeared on a charge of stealing £95 from the Bank, of New Zealand at Wellington, Mr. A. B. Buxton, who represented accused, asked for the suppression of his client’s name.
Mr. E. Page, S.M.: What are the facts you are alleging against accused, Chief-Detective ?
The Chief-Detective: We allege that accused, while engaged as a tellers’ clerk, removed the cancelling marks from two cheques and had them cashed. After being interviewed by the police in connection with the matter Huthnance refunded £75 anonomously, and when arrested said that he had returned the other £2O by leaving £5 notes in various places in the bank. We allege, however, that this is not true.
. His Worship stated he would grant the remand and admit the accused to bail in the sum of £l5O with one surety of an equal amount. He would not, however, make an order for the suppression of the name.
