Nominations for all events at the autumn meeting of the Dannevirke Pacing Club will close to-night, at 9 o’clock. .As at Woodville, Mr. AV. H. Gaisford has donated a gold cup trophy in connection with the Dannevirke Cup race.
Acceptances for the first day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s meeting will close to-night, at 8 o’click, when final payments for the Jackson Stakes are due.
Quarterdeck, the winner of the Trial Stakes at Dunedin yesterday, is a three-year-old brown filly by Panmure or Autumnus from Sailor's Hope, a mare who is sister to Quarantine (Treadmill —Fairhaven). In estimating the form of the field yesterday Dunedin racegoers did not have much encouragement to back the winner. She had started only twice previously, running unplaced on each occasion, once at the Banks Peninsula meeting in October, and once at the New Zealand Cup meeting.
Backers of Eliminator in the Trial Stakes at Dunedin yesterday were fortunate that the bracketed stablemate, Felony, was able to run second to Quarterdeck. Felony is a chestnut colt by Boniform from Blackmail, and like his dam was bred by Mr. I. G. Duncan, Felony, who is raced by Messrs. A. Murdoch and R. Hudson, has shown promising form in the south this season. The Trenthain trainer H. Telford was operated on yesterday, and his friends will be pleased to hear that he is progressing satisfactorily.
When Lady Cavendish won the Flying Handicap at New Plymouth yesterday it was her first success since she won the Ail-Aged Stakes at the Avondale autumn meeting last April, although she has generally managed to obtain a place in her races.
Hynanna’s win in the Taranaki Cup is his third success on end, and apparently it is going to take a good deal or weight to stop him, for the class opposed to him at present is not very strong. He i s in a fair way to repeat Piuthair s treble of twelve months ago—Bgmont Cup, Taranaki Cup, and Wanganui Cup.
Scoff has been sold to a patron of A B. Wormaid, and will probably do the Nelson and Marlborough meetings.
Mr. W. Quirk was the final bidder for Nucleus, when she went under the hammet; at the Auckland Cup sales (says the "Otago Daily Times’')- Ho went to SO guineas, and when the auctioneer announced that the reserve stood at 1(10 guineas, Mr. F. Ehrhorn jumped in and said ho would take her. If Air. Quirk had clecled to say so, he had, as last bidder, first call on the mare at the reserve, but unluckily ho failed to take advantage of what has since proved a royal opportunity.
Footfall is going along steadily in useful work, and he may Ire a starter in the Midsummer Handicap next week, though this will depend on the weight ho receives. After that his future programme will be settled. Ho may . la kept going, but there is a possibility that he will be put aside for a spell, preparatory to being got ready for spring engagements.
The two-year-old filly Impertinence has contracted a cold, necessitating the cancellation of her trip to Wingatui.
It was reported in January that the appointment of two stipendiary stewards for the Trotting Association would be made after the four surviving applicants had interviewed the appointment committee on Saturday next. Apparently, however, the final selection will not be made till Alarch, as the latest announcement is that the examination will eventuate in Wellington next month.
Air. A. Holmes, for many years caretaker for the Napier Park Racing Club at Greenmeadows, was the successful applicant for a similar position with Hie Waipukurau Club. The Napier Park post is now advertised.
Merry Alint is now running out at Otatara, and unfortunately his injured hock is showing but slight recovery, and
“If a stranger was to walk on the Hastings tracks and be asked to select a likely Derby colt among our two-year-olds he would immediately nominate Clarendon (says the “Tribune"). This colt, in his two races at Christmas, did not suggest to the casual observer that he was likely to win such an event. Trainer T. Quinlivau has not bustled this colt at all, giving him his own time to come to hand. As a Derby colt he really looks the part. As a more masculine handsome two-year-old it would be difficult to find. Un Saturday morning he showed a marked improvement on any previous track gallop. Going with the Absurd filly Dark Girl — who always in the past showed the more pace—he simply played with her the whole way and ran his five furlongs comfortably on the plough in (13 2-ssec.” Clarendon is a bay or brown colt by Psychology from Pendant, by Motiti, from Jewellery, by St. Leger. Coot returned to Hastings from Pahiatua in a sorry plight, tier near side, where she had been knocked against the rails, showing evidence of how hard she had been bumped against the fence. The injuries are yielding to veterinary treatment, and it is considered probable that Coot may race next month. he may not race again this season. The treatment since returning from Auckland has hardly more than arrested the injury, which is such that only a lung process will have any material effect. Curtsey (Limoml —Salute), also in J. Al. Cameron’s stable, sutlers from a similar mishap, but as it is not so bad she may race in the autumn. When this mare and Goshawk were early three-year-olds she showed much more promise and pace than the Alagpie gelding.
Last week Paganelli made bis first appearance on the tracks at be Kapa since his return home from the Wellington meeting. The Lord Qucx —Ringdove gelding looks very well. He is being prepare 1 for the Jackson btakes at Wanganui, while he is entered in the sprint event on the first day.
Comical, at Poukawa, is doing a fair amount of light exercise. If Comical has benefited by his experience ni jumping big fences last season, Hawke’s Bay should have two good 'chasers next winter in him and Alaunga.
Referring to the Alatamata meeting, the "New Zealand Herald’’ says:—“lt would be impossible not to make a reference to the excellent starting of Air. A. Vincent, who effected some splendid dispatches. Although he had sopio difficult horses to deal with, his work throughout was of a really high standard, and was the subject of much favourable comment.”
Royal Damon, who has bad a strenuous time this season, is now pottering about, and will in all probability not race until the middle of next month at Napier. Although racing most eonsistenly, he has won but two races—Dannevirke (September) and Woodville (November) this season.
The friends of the Hawke’s Bay trainer. P. P. Neagle, will regret to learn that this week he had to enter a private hospital for treatment for internal trouble.
S. Hodge, who for a long period has been associated with George Jones at Greenmeadows, has resigned his position for the purpose of filling the position of private trainer to Mr. T. Impey, of Auckland. Hodge enters his new position at the end of the month. DUNEDIN MEETING OPENING DAY’S RESULTS PINK NOTE WINS CUP Dominion Special Service. Dunedin, February 9. The summer meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club opened to-day in fine ami oppressively hot weather and before a very large attendance. The racing was of an interesting order throughout the day, tho fast state of the track making for good times. The totalisator handleu £23,808 IDs. for the day, compared with £26,841 10s. for the first day last year. AUTUMN HURDLES. The day’s programme opened with the Autumn Hurdle Handicap, from whicli Cartoon and Whitirangi were withdrawn. Coastguard was made a slightly better favourite than Wharnclifi'e, but his supporters soon lost interest in the race, as he blundered at the initial obstacle ami dislodged his rider. Jack o’ Lantern gave a lot of trouble at the post, and was left standing when the barrier was lifted, eventually giving the field a hundred yards break. Beauty Light and Alapo piloted the field over tho first half mile, with Kaikahu a Koauau following. Entering (ho lasi round, Jack o’ Lantern, who had quickly made up lost ground, took charge from Beauty Light, Atapo, and Kaikahu, with Koauau and Wharneliffo well back. Jack o’ Lantern jumped the last fence clear of Kaikahu and Beauly Light, but weakened in the run to the post, and Kaikahu appeared to have the race well in hand. Koauau, however, finished with a determined run from the distance post, and in a hard tussle got up in time to beat Kaikahu on the post. Beauty Light was three lengths away, third, a head in front of Jack o Lantern, with Wharneliffo and Atapo tailed off. Tho winner had executed attractive work prior to leaving Ricearton, ami his success was well anticipated. Ho ran the race in patches, as after being close up to tho leaders over the first part of the journey, he was in what appeared a hopeless position approaching the last fence. His rider was hard at work on him over the last furlong, and it was only in the last stride that he beat Kaikahu, who ran a solid race throughout. Jack o’ Lantern lost his chance at the start, and as the race was run, ho would have had an easy task if he had got away with the field. Tho success of Koauau gave W. AlcDonald Ida first win since he resumed training. TRIAL STAKES. Karitane was the only withdrawal from the Trial Stakes, .for which the bracketed pair, Felony and Eliminator, were made the public selection. Clarenson, Nanette, and Eliminator were in the van for the first half-mile, and Clarenson was first to enter the straight from Quarterdeck, Rhondda and Eliminator, with Green Cloth and El Nido at the tail of the field. Once .heads were turned for home, Quarterdeck took charge and, withstanding challenges from Felony and Rhondda, won in attractive stylo by a neck from Felony, who was barely a length in front of Rhondda. Eliminator was a close fourth, and then followed Clarenson, Tardy and Nanette. This was Quarterdeck’s initial victory. She was considered to have had good prospects at the Wellington meeting, but unfortunately struck herself a few days prior to the fixture and was not taken north. PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP. First. Sight carried close on half the machine total in the President’s Handi-
cap, but be had io lower his colours to the third choice. King Balboa, who followed Quickform ami Luininant into I lie straight. King Balboa took charge inside the distance, and although challenged by the favourite, who came from I lie back of the field, won by half a length, with Luininant, who failed to sustain the effort, two lengths away third. Quickform was a head away next, followed by Lady AlcKenna, Alone; Peer, and Eyed Ova. King Balboa registered a comparatively easy victory. First Sight was a long way from the leaders until the home turn, where he made a forward move on the outside. He showed promise commencing the run home, but was unable to make any impression on the winner. PUBLICANS’ HANDICAP. Money Order was made a strong favourite for tho Publicans' (Handicap, carrying close on seven hundred tickets more than entrusted to Booster. The race provided a stirring finish after an interesting race. Silver Coot, Stormy, Bright Alark, ami Money Order were prominent from the dispatch, and this was tho order to the home turn. Silver Coot was first into the straight from Bright Alark, Aloney Order, ami Sudden Storm. Silver Coot was challenged by Money Order inside the distance, and Sudden Storm joined in the tussle. In a splendid finish the judge was unable to separate Silver Coot and Aloney Order. Sudden Storm was only a neck away third, with Stormy’ a length away in fourth place in front of Booster, Circulation, and Rob. Money Order's effort, under his big weight, was full of merit, and ho was going better than Silver Coot at the finish. Tho latter reproduced some of his recent track work, and stuck to his task to tho bitter end. Sudden Storm and Good as Gold were slow to move off, and the former was well behind the leaders at the turn for home. Under the eirrumsfances she did well to battle out the finish with the dead-heaters. Booster did not get away too well, and never threatened danger. DUNEDIN CUP. Heather Lad and Wingalui were withdrawn from the Dunedin Cup, ami in a big betting pool Pink Note was a sixhundred ticket better favourite than Set Sail. From a fair start Nincompoop, Front Rank, and Queen Balboa were the first to show out, Satrap being the last io move off. Front Rank went to the front passing tho stand, and led to the back stretch from Nincompoop, Queen Balboa, Arikiwai, and Thorndale and Pink Note. Arikiwai and Thorndale made a forward move approaching tho far turn, and were together entering tho •straight from Nincompoop, and Pink Note, with Satrap moving up on the rails. Thorndale weakened commencing the run home, and Arikiwai took charge at the distance post. Pink Nolo then essayed a strong run, and finishing resolutely, wore down the leader, and beat him by throe-parts of a length. Satrap was a length ami a half away third, a neck in front of Queen Balboa. Nincompoop was close up next, followed by Countersign, Overhaul. Thorndale, Front Rank, Set Sail, and Bilbo. 'The winner had the race at his mercy when tho concluding furlong was tackled. Arikiwai was responsible for his best race to date. Be was under a pull entering tho straight, and looked a certain winner, but was unalle to withstand Hie favourites’s final effort. Satrap had a tempestuous voyage from start to finish, and should have been nearer the winner. Nincompoop, Thorndale, and Front Rank were in the picture tliroughout, but failed to see the journey out. Set Sail was well beaten when half the journey had been covered, and finished well in tho rear. Countersign did not move off favourably, and was never within striking distance of the leaders. CHAMPAGNE STAKES. The seven acceptors paraded for the Champagne Stakes, and most support was forthcoming for Goblin Market, Full Feather and Rin Tin Tin in that order. After the field settled down, Rin Tin Tin look charge from Money Alint, Goblin Market and Full Feather. Rin Tin Tin was tho first to enter the straight from Full Feather, Night March and Goblin Market, and had a clear advantage at the distance. Goblin Alarket then tackled the leader and soon, had him outclassed, winning in a comfort-able-fashion by a length. Night March finished better than Full Feather and beat him for the honours by a head. The remainder were (ailed off. Goblin Alarket clearly showed In's superiority and actually won pulling up. Rin Tin Tin followed up his recent winning performances by acting as pacemaker practically throughout. Full Feather had every chance, but failed to show any promise over the finishing stages. BERWICK HANDICAP. The bracketed pair, Wayward and Aloncv Mine, were in most demand for the Berwick Handicap, but neither took part in the finish. Tripaway was the first to show up in front front Shalimar and Skyquest, with Spearmaid badly squeezed out from the dispatch. This order was maintained to the straight entrance. Skyquest appeared to have Tripaway’s measure inside the distance, but the latter made a final effort and prevailed by three-quarters of a length. Shalimar finished on well into third place, a head away from Skyquest. Spearmaid was a good fourth, and then came Rotor, AV ayward and Aloney Mine. STEWARDS’ HANDICAP. Heather Lad and Alime were the defections from the concluding event, the Stewards’ Handicap, and the public pinned their faitn to Overdrawn, Black Duke and Gay Sonnet, the trio .being fairly evenly supported, Aliss Winkle and Gay Sonnet assumed command after tho field had settled down, and the latter led into the straight from Miss Winkie, Schottische, and Black Duke. An exciting finish was in progress between Gav Sonnet and Aliss Winkie, but Black Duke, with a characteristic finishing effort, caught the pair on the post and gained a meritorious victory by a head. A dcad-heat tor lecom'i money was declared between Gay Sonnet and Miss Winkie, with Schottische, Brightliug, Overdrawn, Zaragoza, and Lucy Locket following in that order. For tile first day of the Taranaki Jockey Club’s meeting the weather was fine ami the going good. There was a large attendance. Tho totalisator handled £19,553, compared with £19,778 for the first day last year. Hynanna won the Taranaki Cup almost as easily as he won the Egmont Cup a week ago, and in his present form he will be hard to beat in the Wanganui Cup next week. Tho race was run at a slow pace, and that played into his hands. Lady Cavendish s victory in tho Flying was not altogether expected, as she had bled recently when working. Followers of favourites received a wholesale beating. Apathy broke a fetlock contesting the Aloturoa Electric Hack Race and was shot. WAITARA HURDLES. Neither Ned Kelly nor Alountain Bell contested tho Waitlira Hurdles, and San Fora was a slightly better favourite than Powhiri, with Airtight and Elysi a nor the best backed oi the others. San Fera, Royal Flight, and Powhiri were in line going through the straight, and Elysianor was nicely tucked in behind them. Powhiri and San Fera then drew away, and along tlie back they were nearly six lengths clear ot the field at the head of which were Airtight and Elysianor. San Fera jumped to the front half a mile from home, but Powhiri gathered him again on the High School bend and stuck on to win by half a length from Airtight, who finished well and beat San I 1 era by three lengths. Elysianor was fourth and Flowing Bowl fifth. , , „ The horse who should do better next time up is Airtight. NGAMOTU JUVENILE HANDICAP. Tea Aliss was backed down to a very short price for the Ngamotu Juvenile Handicap, but she hung out all the way and eventually was beaten by a head by Gold Dawn. The pair were in trout all the way. Lady Quex ran a tanthird and Fermanagh a disappointing fourth. Having to be bustled m the early part of the race accounted for lea Miss. FLYING HANDICAP. While The Hawk was not exactly a good thing beaten, he was unlucky to lose the Flying Handicap. Lady Cavendish led to the turn from The Hawk, Kiosk, Quillfire, and Tip Tree, but The Hawk lost a lot of ground on the turn, and I,adv Cavendish won but only by a neck from The Hawk, who came again. Tip Tree ran a great race, and The Hawk beat him only by a bead. Kiosk was a very close fourth, and Oration was fifth. Tip Tree’s rider lost an iron in the straight. MOTUROA ELECTRIC HACK. Resinous was favourite for the Afoturoa Electric Hack Handicap, but was well beaten. Yawl led to the straight, where Merxcis took charge, but Aropeta finished best, and won by three-quarters of a length, while Merxcis was a length and a half in front of Yawl. Resinous was fourth. The field was very poor. Anathy broke a fctiock during the race and afterwards was destroyed. TARANAKI CUP. A nice field contested the Taranaki Clip. Bright Glow and Hynanna were the favourites. Goshawk, Bright Glow, rud Eden Hall led early in the piece, and passing through the straight the order was Goshawk, Bright Glow, Eden Hall, and Hynanna, with Yoma last. Hynanna moved up ideng the back, ano will; half a mile to go he was close up to Bright Glow, Eden Hall, and Goshawk. Yo.nia commenced to make up ground, and was running past the rear division. Hynanna, Eden Hall, an” Bright Glow were almost in line at the liottoni of the straight, and Hynanna quickly settled tho opposition, and went away to win comfortably by three-quar-ters of a length from Yoma. Eden Hall, who was third, was another half length away, and Bright Glow was a close fourth. Transformer, llipo. Goshawk, Mint Leaf, and Piuthair followed in that order. Hynanna again won decisively, but tho muddling naco suited him. On the other hand, it did nnt suit Bright Glow, who nulled very hard in the etirlv stages. Yoma came from a long way back, and did well to get second. Edon Hall ran a verv fair race, but was not quite good enough. Piuthair was feeling the bard ground, and finished last.
DUNEDIN, TARANAKI, AND GISBORNE MEETINGS
OKATO HACK HANDICAP. Ladykiller was favourite for the Okato Hack Handicap, and he proved that he was unlucky at IJawei’a by winning in a hard finish. Miss Mercia, Always, ami Flying Shot did the early leading, but Sovena and Ladykiller were moving up on the home bend. Sovena took charge in the straight, but the hard ridden Ladykiller got up to beat her by a nose. Always and Miss Mercia were next. Royal Acre was soundly beaten, and Baby Bun was sore. Ladykiller was last six furlongs from home. MIMI HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP. One of the best favourites of the day was beaten when The Immigrant contested the Mimi High-weight Handicap. The Immigrant did not take long to hit the front but The Swell piloted him into the straight, and looked like winning, when Tiega came on the scene nd won very nicely by a length and a half from The Swell, with Sea Star a length away, and Manly and The Immigrant next. TIMARU HACK HANDICAP. Melissa and Paul Lucerne carried most of the money on the Tipiaru Hack Handicap, but both were beaten. Ned Kelly led all the way, and Melissa, who had to cover extra ground, was half a length away at the finish, while Dimmer and Paul Lucerne were next. Melissa should do better soon.
