London, February 8. A display of pork from the Agricultural Show at Christchurch highly pleased Smithfield experts, who aftnsidered the quality and butchering first-rate and the meat eminently suitable for British requirements. The only fault was that some of the porkers were rather too heavy. The first prize for norkers was awarded to No. 124. the second to No. 126; for baconers, the first prize to No. 122, second No. 118.—A.P.A. and “Sun.” WHEAT TRADE STAGNANT IN BRITAIN. (Rec. February 9, 9.15 p.m.) London, February 9. Discussing the unsatisfactory condition of the wheat trade, u leading importer said the stagnation was largely due to the quantity afloat from all exporting countries. 8,190,000 quarters, which was SKOOO in excess of the quantity at this time last year when the European requirements were considerably less. Also a large proportion of the grain afloat was not yet sold. In’ these conditions, the millers naturally were holding off until the last moment. PRESERVATIVES IN BUTTER EFFECT OF PROHIBITION IN ENGLAND. (Rec. February 9. 9.15 p.m.) London, February 9. The clashing of trade interests is responsible for the wide divergence of opinion on the effect of the prohibition of preservatives in butter. Traders who have opposed the measure throughout are at present returning to the attack on the grounds that Dominion butters suffer from Continental competition. Well-in-formed and disinterested persons point out that New South Wales and Queensland, by concentrating on . improved pasteurisation, unpreservatised butter are virtually unaffected, but Victoria, which has not made the same effort, finds unpieservatised butter unsatisfactory. It is the opinion in London that any overtures to the Ministry of Health should be made from Australia. SHIPMENTS OF LAMB FROM AUSTRALIA The New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board has just received a cable from its representative in Australia advising that 57.155 carcases of Lamb were exported from Australia for the fortnight ended February 3. 1928. STOCK SALES Messrs. Dalgety and Co., Ltd. report having held a successful sale of stock J at Upper Hutt on February 7. a good yarding of sheep and a medium yarding of cattle coining forward. There were spmc exceptionally good lines of 2-tooth wethers offered, the growth and condition being excellent, and for these keen competition ensued. A fair yarding of lambs is also reported, but the demand for this class of stock was rather dull owing, no doubt, to the continued dry weather. The auctioneers quote as follows:--85 good-conditioned 2-tootli wethers, 235. 7d.; 150 ditto. 235. 3d.; 60 ditto. 235.; 80 ditto. 235. 4d.; 30 dit to, 21s. 6d.: 15 fat wethers. 265.; 60 ditto. 265. 4d.; 20 ditto. 255. 2d.: medium 2-tooth wethers. 20s. to 21s. 9d.: medium M.S. lambs, 14b. to 155.: cull lambs. ss. WAINGAWA KEEPS UP VALUES. That tlie prosperity of both the farming community and town-residents is immensely benefited by the operations of the Waingawa Works is a fact too often overlooked. Competition amongst buyers stimulates prices and creates better results for producers. In addition, the presence of a freezing works in this important sheepproducing district means that the killing can be done as quickly as possible after the stock leaves the paddock.. This is an important factor in maintaining that high quality for which Wairarapa mutton and lamb are famous. Without Waingawa, all stock would have to be railed to Wellington or elsewhere, with risk of damage, wastage, and hold-up. Moreover, Waingawa is a direct economic benefit to the district, for an average of over £50,000 was paid out by the works during the past four years. Fanners who think about these important points will quickly, realise how important it is to send their stock to Waingawa, and do all in their power to keep 1 the local freezing works open and flourishing. It is imperative that the works be maintained in hands capable of keeping up competition.— Published by Arrangement.
