CROQUET

DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIPS THIRD DAY’S PLAY Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, February 8. The third day of the croquet tourney was greeted with bright sunshine, but towards mid-day the skies became overcast, causing rather a glaring light, which proved rather trying to the eyes. The game between Sir Francis Wemyss and Miss Retallack and Archdeacon Creed Meredith and Mrs. Smith was concluded, blue and black having seven points to make, and red and yellow ten, bv Sir Francis Wemyss and Miss Retn'llack. The English lady made three points very soon, Archdeacon Meredith following with 2 more, and the score was 7 to 5 in the home team’s favour. Sir Francis Wemyss missed, and Mrs. Smith made the penultimate with black, luit baulked at the rover. Sir-Francis Wemyss missed, and the home team won by seven points, after a very careful finish.

None of the players has shown the form displayed at Wanganui; this is probably due to the fast nature of the lawns.

The game between Mrs. Tiffen and J. Murray against Mrs. Petrie and Robertson occupied five hours, none of the players putting up a brilliant performance. The scores towards the termination of the gn’me wore 24—20. and Mrs. Petrie and W. Robertson proved the winners by six points. A game in the ladies’ singles, which was rather prolonged, was between Mrs. Wickens (Featherston) and Mrs. Meikle (TeArolia). The game was in progress for 41 hours, and the To Aroha player lost by only five points. Following upon a petition from the players, the time limit has been abolished in the handicap singles.
