4 MR. BALDWIN’S GENEROSITY
February 7. On December 9 Mr. Winston Churchill, Chancellor of the Exchequer, stated that the total amount of gifts made bv individuals to the Exchequer during and since the war was over £1,078,000. A gift of £120.000 to purchase war loans for cancellation was made bv “F.S.T ” in 1919, this being 20 per cent, of his estate. It later became known that “F.S.T.” was Mr. Baldwin, the present Prime Minister, then Financial Secretary to the Treasury.
The latest gift of half a million sterling, invested at 41 per cent , compound interest, would amount in 100 years to nearly £41,000,000. —British Official Wireless.
