NGAHAURANGA GORGE ROAD
PAVING TO BE COMPLETED LATER DECISION OF LOCAL HIGHWAYS BOARD Information as to the City and Suburban Highways Construction Board’s loan finance was forthcoming at yesterdays meeting of tho board, in the following report from tho city engineer (Mr. U. A. Hart). , , “In reply to a memorandum dated January 31, dealing with the £I6GO reduction by tho Government Loans Board from the total amount of the JK7O,WO for the suburban highways loan, as submitted to tho Loans Board, reducing the amount authorised to <£65,400. “This reduction of JII6OO evidently refers to a length of pavement approximately one mile. Stokes Vailey-Sil.ver-sirearu section, shown on part item 4 on the schedule of application submitted to the Loans Board, of a total amount of <£28,820, which amount includes the Government subsidy of -214,410. The estimated, cost of (bis mile of pavement is £8273. The subsidy on this amount after actual •construction cost, would be £3597, which shows a difference of <4376 from the .£l6OO deduction, as made by the Loans Board. Provided the mile of pavement referred to,is excluded fromtlio programme, as submitted to the Loans Board, the difference of £76 should not materially'’ affect the amended programme. "Regarding the estimated cost of paving the Ngahauranga Gorge Road, between tho Hutt Road and Johnsonville, I have to report that the bottom portion of the Ngahauranga Gorge Road has already been paved for a length of .475 miles. This length was in the original schedule of'the Wellington City and Suburban Highways Hutt Road Amendment Act. Tho remaining length of Ngahauranga Gorge Road was not included in the. original schedule, and ..further was not included in the schedule submitted to the Loans Board. Tt is <42 chains in length, and estimated to cost for paving construction <£l3,(Wo,_ plus. 15 per cent, supervision and contingencies, or a total cost of <£14,950. This length of road should also bo subjected to subsidy by the Main Highways Board of 50 per cent, on construction cost of -C6500.” After some discussion on the necessity or otherwise of paving the Gorge Road from Ngahauranga to Johnsonville, it was decided to go on with the work at a later date. As there was no possibility of doing the work (Ids season, the necessary loan need not bo raised until later in the ear.
