NOTES AND COMMENTS

“The Watcher.”)
Nominations for all events at the autumn meeting of the Woodville District Jockey Club (including Maiden Stakes and Novice Plate) close with the secretary at I) p.m. on Friday. The Woodville Cup carries with it a gold cup (value otlOO), donated by Mr. W. H. Gaisford.
Nominations for all events at the autumn meeting of the Dannevirke Pacing Club will close on Friday at 9 p.m. As at Woodville. Mr. AV. 11. Gaisford has donated a gold cup trophy in connection with the Dannevirke Cup race.
Acceptances for the first day of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s meeting will close to-morrow at 8 p.m.
The following horses have been, scratched for all engagements at the Taranaki Jockey Club’s autumn meeting at New Plymouth this week: Rapine, Town Bird, Upoko and Marble King.
B. H. Morris is to ride Bright Glow in the Taranaki Cup.
Partaga is very sore, and will not I e taken to the New Plymouth meeting (says the Hawera “Star”). The Lamb also is working unsatisfactorily and will not make the trip. Orazone will not race on Thursday, but will probably start in the mile and a quarter on Saturday. Warflame will most likely go up to New Plymouth on Saturday. San Fera will be ridden by H. Burt in the hurdles. Airtight will have the services of C. Adams in his jumping essays. R. Brough is taking Mr. Gleeson’s two-year-old I'lgeria, Mountain Bell, and Royal Acre to the meeting. Mountain Bell may be reserved for the second day’s hurdle race. Silent has gone a bit sore apd will be eased up for a day or two. J. Fryer intends taking only two horses up for * Thursday—Bright Glow and Airtight, unless weather conditions change!. Vivo will be ridden at New Plymouth by J. Barry.
Greengrocer, after running in the Tonks Memorial, pulled up sore and is an unlikely starter at tlie New Plymouth meeting
T. Tito will ride Te Atiawa, To Monanui and Miss Mercia in their engagements. A. McCormac will pilot Yoma as usual.
Euphonium, whoso knee has caused much anxiety since the Marton Cup, has probably run his last race, as after running in the Tonks’ Memorial on Saturday, he finished practically on three legs, and very little hope is entertained of his standing further preparation.
Lady Quex did not suffer any ill effects from her fall at Hawera.
Goshawk injured his foot, slightly in die running of the Nolan Cup, and was not started on Saturday, but he rppears to have thrown off all effects.
Acceptances for the opening day of the Taranaki autumn meeting on Thursday are very satisfactory, and in addition the quality of the competitors is good. The meeting promises to be a very successful one. The race track, although suffering from the prevailing dry spell, is in good order with a thick solo of grass to take the jar out of the going. The opening day’s fixtures will bo the Flying Handicap and the Taranaki Cup, and on Saturday the principal event is the Taranaki Stakes, for which a good field will go to the post. Proceedings on Thursday will commence with the Waitara Hurdles. figment form suggests a good race from Airtight, who should be suited by the shorter journey. Just John is a new comer with good form to his credit, and San Fera has only got to improve a little on his Hawera running to be very prominent.
Tea Miss scored on the second day at Hawera, and should be improved for her engagement in the Juvenile Handicap. Gold Dawn may go better on her home track and with luck Fermanagh, who got away badly last week, should show up. The Flying Handicap should be an interesting contest. On recent form it would appear safe to reduce the, possibilities to four, The Hawk, Kiosk, Lady Cavendish and High Finance. Rapine and Te Monanui will find it hard to sprint with this lot, and the rest of the field are moderates. On the round course and short straight, Lady Cavendish is sure to run a great race.
Mendip has the best credentials of those engaged in the Moturoa Electric Hack, but according to all reports Cadenza, the halt-brother to Will Oakland, Finelli, and Finora, is extra good, while Fortalice may improve on his fourth at Egmont. Cadenza may turn out as good as reported'. He is a stable mate of The Swell.
Egmont Cup running points distinctly to Bright Glow being very hard to beat in the Taranaki Cup. Bidden by B. H. Morris, she should account for all those who raced against her last week, including Hynanna, who is raised 71b. Hynanna will again run well, for he is a good-class gelding and improving. His extra weight, however, will bother him to repeat his Hawera victory over. Bright Glow. Taking a line through Mint Leaf in tlie Takapuna Cup both Eden Hall and Transformer should l>e beaten by Bright Glow. Goshawk and Greengrocer are light-weight possibilities, but form points undoubtedly to Bright Glow.
Of those engaged in the Okato Hack Handicap. Royal Acre. Kawhakina, Wliisogne, Kidykiller. and Flying Shot all showed form at Hawera. The Swell and Baliy Bun are fresh horses with possibilities, arid The Swell’s form at Trantham, viewed through Goshawk and Greengrocer, is extra good. The Swell, Royal Acre, and Baby Bun may do best.
The Swell is also engaged in the Mimi High Weight, where the Auckland-train-ed hor.se The Immigrant promises to lie one of the favourites. Tiega, Orazone, and Manly alt showed winning form at Hawera. Orazone, however, is unlikely to run. The Immigrant ami Manly may be preferred by backers. Vivo’s form at Egmont was not right and she might improve.
If reserved for the concluding even Ned Kelly, who is also in the hurdles, will be in demand. He ran two good races at Hawera. Paul Lucerne is ar improving sort, who should again run well, and Onward may bo prominent.
The principal events at the Dunedin meeting to-day, the Cup and Publicans’ Handicap, contain horses whose North Island form points to them running well ferward. Tn the Publicans’ Handicap, Money Order and Stormy will be in demand, and both should run well. Good as Golrl should not ’be ignored. She failed at Trent ham, but on the opening day here her fourth was an excellent effort, and with the olhers well up in the weights she has onlv got to repeat that gallop to be difficult to beat.
, In the Cup 9.8 is a big burden for Set Sail, but she is a game, honest mare, and is sure to run well. Trenfham running points decidedly to Pink Note and Set Sail. Satrap is being confidently supported by his connections, and if he runs up to Derby form he will have a chance. Apparently he was right, off colour at Auckland.
Air. L. G. Hill is making satisfactory progress towards a complike restoration from the effects of his accident, and expects to be discharged from the doctor’s control within the next few days.
The bloodstock belonging to the estate of the late Mr. A. B. Armour, will be submitted to auction in Dunedin tomorrow. The list will be comprised of horses in training and brood mares.
“Hermit,” writing in the Hawke’s Bay “Herald,” says; “Two incidents of which the general public know nothing, but which indicated an exceptional degree of interest in tho results of the racing en the part of some person or persons unknown, are current topics amongst those connected officially with the conduct of the Gisborne summer meeting. But for the vigilance of the club officials, Thursday’s racing might have produced new sensations. The first discovery was made in the early hours of the day, when an inspection was made cf the scales upon which tho riders weigh out and weigh in. Balanced on the beam of the scales was found a slug of sheet lead, weighing about two ounces, but so placed that it exerted a leverage equivalent to a weight, of 21b. on the seat of tho machine. Thus a jockey whose weight was 8.0 could be qualified to ride at. 8.2, had the slug escaped observation. Hardly loss interesting was the discovery that, after the course had been inspected in the morning and found to be fully prepared for the first event of the day, the hurdle race, some mischievous person had ventured on to tlie course and levelled Ihe jump at the three-furlong post. The hurdles were affixed Io standards driven well into Hie ground, and were strong enough to present a good resistance to any impact, but just prior to the start of tho event, the course caretaker found the whole length of the jump down, Tlie hurdles were re-erected, and Hie -public knew nolhipg of the incident, until late in flic day.”
Mr. G. AL Currie’s Thespian filly Curtain was going along very well up till last week, and gave promise of running prominently in tho Juvenile Handicap at Wanganui. However, she has contracted a cold again, and has been thrown out of work.
Lysander has built up well since returning from Auckland where he lightened up considerably. He slipped ovyr five furlongs on Tuesday morning comfortably in Imin. f.lsec., the quarter taking 25sec. ••uid the three furlongs 37sec. It lias been slated that some gear was to be tried on Lysander when next raced, but tliis is incorrect, as there is no such intention.
Civility looks very 'veil. She was given useful work on the plough.
King Mart was given easy work on the plough. The son of King Jlark run a fine race on the second day at Hawera, and he gives every promise of turning out useful.
Mask is being given easy work at pre] sent, as he will not be wanted until the Auckland Easter meeting. The same applies to Episode.
Mr. Harry Lewis, the well-known Adelaide owner, does a lot of travelling, and ho is at present on a trip to New Zealand. He has had no luck with his horses of late, ami most of them are spelling. Mr. Leap's will return from the Dominion in time to attend the autumn meeting at Flemington. A Heed was to have ridden Greenray ini the Newport Welter at Williamstown on January 30, but he bad to forfeit the engagement, owing to slight indisposition. The trouble is not serious, and Heed will bo able to resume riding immediately. Heed is riding in great form at present.
A London paper says there was an amusing incident at a meeting of the Easingwold (Yorks) District Council last month. The council were considering applications for the position of clerk of works for the new water scheme, when the clerk announced that one candidate, by an oversight, had enclosed with his application a postal order for one shilling, and the following note: “Please put me one shilling on Blaris. Any coming, one shilling Bynac and one shilling on Grakle.” The clerk caused much laughter by adding that ho had looked up the racing returns, and that the man had lost. He also lost the post.
Commenting upon the recent incident at Randwick, where the judge’s decision caused a. scene, “Pilot” writes in the “Referee”: “Sion palpably raised a lastmoment effort, but though ho was a little too wide out for me to bo definite concerning his placing, he beat Royal Tune (fourth) by such a narrow margin that it was difficult to think two horses separated them. 1 am too well acquainted with the peculiar angle at the win-ning-post at Rand.viek to positively declare the judge erred, but I could quite understand the correctness of his verdict being doubled. From the grandstand Sion appeared to win, but those who view a race from that point of 'vantage always favour the horse nearest the judge’s box. Pike, who rode Lady Buckinbar, was confident his mount won, and the owner and trainer ot Sion thought their horse was beaten. In fairness to the judge, it must be added that some of the spectators who stood as near his box as possible were in accord with his decision. One of these—a well-known bookmaker—remarked to me the following day: ‘There has been a lot of discussion, but make no mistake, the judge was right. Myself and two others (whom be named) were next the fence which divides the weighing-yard from the lawn, and any of us would have bet a tenner on Sion after the horses passed the post. He seemed to stick mt his neck in the last couple of strides, and you could not convince us that Lady Buckir.bar beat him.’ They are in accord with the official verdict, but T cannot recall a previous occasion on which the occiwanls of the. official stand were so unanimous in the belief that the judge was at fault.” fixtures.
