M.C.C. v. SOUTH AFRICA FIFTH TEST HOME TEAM DECLARES BY Telegraph.—Press Association. Copyright. Cape Town, February 7. Continuing their first innings against M.C.C. in the Fifth Test at Durban, the South Africans had compiled 332 runs for the loss of seven wickets when they declared. This total gave them an advantage of only 50 runs on the first innings. When stumps were drawn for the day, M.C.C. in their second visit to tlie crease had made 30 runs for the loss of one wicket. The opening pair for South Africa, Taylor and Coen, played confidently. Taylor giving a polished display, and Coen batting impressively. Excellent bowling and fielding on the part of M.C.C. compelled the South Africans to abandon a forcing policy. Staples’s leg theory was one factor in keening the runs down. Intent on wearing down the bowling, Catterall and Cameron indulged in stonewalling tactics, and eventually they scored freely and vigorously. A fine all-round partnership by these two batsmen produced 135 runs in 93 minutes for the fifth wicket. Catferall’s score of 119 included two sixes and fourteen fours. The batsmen were completely on ton of the tired bowling, and when the home team had (rained a lead of 50 runs. Doane declared the innings closed. Holmes was onl to the last ball of the first over in M.C.C.’s second innings. Following nre tl’» detailed scores: — SOUTH AFRICA. First Innings. Taylor, 1.b.w.. b. Staples 36 Coen, b.
