INCREASED BUTTERFAT PRODUCTION

The Dairy Division of the Department .of Agriculture reports that the salted butter graded ,--'for January totalled 9975 tons, and the unsalted 393 tons, in all 10,368 tons, compared with 9690 tons salted and 368 tons unsalted, a total of 10,068 tons for January of 1927; an increase of 2.9 per cent. For the six months ended Jan tary, 1928, the respective quantities were 49,205 tons and 2651 tons, a total of 51,856 tons, compared with 44,247 tons and 1426 tons; a total of 45,672 tons for the corresponding period of the preceding season; an increase of 13.5 per cent. The cheese graded for January comprised: White, 7729 tons; coloured, 3744 tons; a total of 11,473 tons; compared with 7183 tons white and 3790 tons coloured ; a total ol 10,973 tons for January, 1927; an increase of 4.5 per cent. The quantities for the six months ended January, 1928, were: White, 30,617 tons; coloured, 15,965 tons; a total of 46,582 tons; compared with 29,799 tom white, and 16,013 tons coloured, a total of 44,812 tons, for the corresponding period of the preceding season; an increase ot 3.9 per cent. Converting these figures into bitterfat equivalent there is Ml increase o 10.54 per cent, in butt ’at prodiction for the six months as compared witn the corresponding period of thej'-LJ-'O-*” season. / , Stocks held in various grading ports at January 31, were: Butter, £3BB tons cheese, 7997 tons; as compared witn 12,478 tons butter, and 11,59 tons of cheese held on January 31.
