NAVY LEAGUE

WELLINGTON BRANCH AIEETING

Sir Alexander Roberts presided over a good attendance at a meeting of the Wellington branch of the Navy League yesterday. A letter was received from the head office slating that the Navy League had been busy combating the extremists af pacifism, who were advocating disarmament. The chairman remarked that evidently the pacifist section had been successful in regard to the laying down of three cruisers. The letter from England also stated that it was hoped to hold an overseas conference in London during 1'528. Correspondence was proceeding with Lord Linlithgow, now in India, with regard to this project. It also stated that the league was continuing to grow in numbers. A photograph of the New Zealand wreath which was placed in a block of ice on the plinth of the Nelson Alonument in London last Trafalgar Day was received.

The chairman, reporting on the Sea Scout section, said that tw.o new troups had been formed. It was decided to make a donation of £2 2s. to their regatta on Easter Monday. The chairman submitted a report of the Policv Committee, which had met that afternoon. A number of remits had been prepared for the conference of the branches, to be held on February 22 and >23. One was a recommendation for the appreciation of the Government’s action in extending the Roval Naval Reserve.

The following delegates were elected to represent the Wellington branch at the conference: —Airs. J. Findlay, Airs. J. Darling, Air. A. IL Hollis, and Captain Olpliert, D. 5.0., A sub-commit-tee was set up to go into the matter of the entertainment of the delegates.

The report of the Education Committee stated that 482 new members had been enrolled at Alasterton schools, 14 at Hawera High School, 65 at I’atea Sclio.il, 5 at Alarton, and 2 at Alanutahi (I’atea). This showed a total of 4223 for 1927, as against a total of 2819 or the preceding year.
