Tho old sport of kite-flyins is cnjoviiig something of a vogue at Takapuna' at fiesenl (says tlie “New Zealand Herald”), and the beach has become I lie rendezvous of numerous kite enthusiasts both young and old and of both sexes. In addition t<» the usual diamond-shaped kites, all sorts of novelties are taking the air. including different varieties ol box ard aeroplane kites.

At low tide the other day the scourings of the beach at New Brighton, due to current from the north, were plainly visible (says the "Lyttelton Times”), tn some places large holes had been left half-way between high and low tide, and being full of warm water, were much enjoyed as playgrounds by the young children. Along the edge of the surf were a scries of holes and channels, some nearly three feet deep, and up to a chain wide. On the seaward side there was usually a sandbank, where the waves were breaking, and which was almost high and dry. In the very shallow water the holes wore very difficult tn discern, and with the tide a li'tle higher, they would certainly come as a great surprise Io anyone battling who suddenly found the water two or three feet deeper than be expected.
