FROM FAR AND NEAR Nelson Closing Schools Early.—Owing to Hie prevailing heat, the Nelson Education Board has decided to close the schools this week daily from noon. — Special Service. Truck Jumps Bails.—A train from Auckland, due at Frankton at 6.40 yesterday, arrived at 9.45 a.m., owing to a truck loaded with benzine jumping the rails at Whangamarino, states a Press Association message from Hamilton. County Councillor Re-elected.—As no other nominations were received for the vacancy made by Cr. S. G. Nathan’s resignation from the Hutt County Council, he was re-elected to the position of councillor without opposition. Final Leave to Aopeal.—Final leave to appeal to the Privy Council has been granted by Their Honours Mr. Justice Sim and Mr. Justice Ostler in the case in which the Commissioner of Stamp Duties proceeded against Olive Finch for the recovery of death duty. Mr. Cosgrave Returning to Ireland.— The President of the Free State Dail, Mr. Cosgrave, left New _ York by the Olympic early this morning on his return to Ireland, after Ins brief visit to the United States and Canada. —British Official Wireless. Stowaways From New Zealand.—A Press Association message from Sydney says that shortly after the C’ydonia left New Zealand four stowaways were discovered, their ages ran/ing from 16 to 19 years. One is a Maori. The police are m communication with their parents with a view to the return of the youths to their homes. Motor Cyclist Injured—With his head, badly injured. Lawrence Cartwright, a carpenter, living at Eastbourne, was found near a lamppost at Eastbourne yesterday afternoon. His overturned motor-cycle was nearby. Admitted to the hospital shortly before six o’clock, he was later reported to be progressing favourably.
False Presences. —‘William Maddson Alt, aged 40, pleaded guilty in the Auckland Magistrate’s Court to obtaining £1565 by false pretences from the New Zealand Guarantee Corporation, of Wellington, in motor-lorry dealings. He was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Alt was extradited from Honolulu.—Press Assn.
Body Found in Lake.—The body of Horace Humphreys, who had been missing since January 27, was found in Lake Okareka by James Gordon, states a Press Association message from Rotorua. The body was naked. The clothes were found neatly bundled under a ledge nearby.
Inculcating Courtesy.—Now and again there are popular outcries in the papers about school children occupying seats in trams when adults are standing. This year the Tramways Department has taken the matter ni hand, and has decided to put a stop to the cause of these complaints. On the face of all the new school tram tickets, it has printed two lines in red, which read:— “This ticket is issued subject to condition that holder does not occupy a seat when adult passengers are standing -jn the same compartment.”
Water at Eastbourne.—The clerk of the Eastbourne Borough Council, Mr. P. S. Hargreaves, yesterday informed a DoMiNiONijrepresentative (hat advice had. been received from the Health Department, stating that the water from the council’s well had been lested, and that all was in order. Mr. Hargreaves stated that the water was now available for residents, who could make application to the borough foreman for the quantity required, and arrangements would be made for its immediate delivery.
Maori Broadcast.—From radio station 2YA, Wellington, last night, a special programme in commemoration of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi was broadcast. A party of Maoris from Wanganui were the entertainers, and gave a most successful performance. The Sy-monds-Ellwood string combination played delightful numbers. Speeches were made by the Prime Minister and Sir Maui Pomare. The programme will he repeated to-night, commencing at 11 o’clock and concluding at I a.m., for the convenience of listeners in the outlying New Zealand dependencies and for reception in Australia.
