THE RAILWAY PILLAR ON THE HUTT ROAD
Sir,—Some years ago the Railway Department deemed it necessary to construct a railway bridge just outside Auckland Railway Station, atirl spanning one of Auckland’s main roads. The plans provided for a pillar in the centre of the roadway, but vigorous protests were made, and, ultimately, the bridge was built, minus Hie obstruction. Sir Joseph IVard has taken part in the discussion regarding the Hutt railway bridge, and will no doubt remember that in the case of Hie northern bridge the Auckland people provided money to pay for the extra cost caused by cutting out the central pillijr. At the time Sir Joseph Ward was a responsible member of the New Zealand Government. and I therefore suggest that what was “sauce for Auckland’s goo'se is also sauce for Wellington’s gander,” and that Sir Joseph Ward should take such steps ns will ensure that those who desire tho non-eroefion of (he central nillar should provide Hie extra payment.—l am, etc. C.H.C. Wellington, February 3.
