“DISLIKE FOR THE SEA”
YOUNG MAN GIVEN A CHANCE
“This young man has never been before the Court previously, although the police have interviewed him once or twice in connection witli thefts in the city. ]l e i s regarded by tho police as a liar and the makings cf a dangerous criminal.” The above remarks were made by Chief-Detective Ward in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, when referring to Charles Appelbeo, aged 19, who admitted stealing <£7 in money, the property of Arthur Hunter, who was a snipmate of his on board the s.s. Arahura, Tho Magistrate (Mr. J. 11. Salmon, S.M.) to accused: “You are steering a dangerous course, and I warn you to be more careful in future. I can give you an opportunity this time, but remember it is the last you will have. ” Accused: “I have never reaily had a chance in life, sir. My father wrecked the home when I was very young, through drink, and afterwards I was placed on a training ship, and sent to sea when T didn’t want to go to sea at all. I don’t like the sea. and I have ambition for other things.” The Magistrate-. ''Would you like to leave it now?”
Accused: “Yes, sir, I would.” Mr. Salmon placed Appelbee on probation for twelve month, and instructed the probation officer to do his best io find him a position ashore. Accused was also ordered to make restitution as directed by the probation officer.
