Garden thieves with motor-cars at their disposal have been keeping Marshland farmers up late at night for several weeks past, and rewards are offered for the apprehension of rhe nocturnal vegetable snatchers (says the “Lyttelton Tinies’’). Onions and potatoes have been carried off while the owners slept, and telltale footprints next morning have revealed the tale of a hasty raid. One farmer declares that he saw a motor-car speeding away with a goodly load of his garden produce. Making their calls late at night, the thieves do not waste any time in filling their bags. Watches have been kept,, but luck has played them well and' the patient vigils of victimised farmers have so far been unavailing. Vegetable snatching is not the result of extensiv * unemployment. It is a menace which is as recurring as the garden growth, but farmers declare that the thieves this year are more troublesome tlia.i usual. Often they carry imav car loads and return for more.
