OIL LEASES CASE
♦ EVIDENCE OF MR. DENBY RESPONSIBILITY FOR CONTRACTS Washington, December 8. The former Secretary of the Navy, Air. Denby, testified at the trial of Fall and Doheny that he took the responsibility of tiie Elk Hills lease and the Pearl Harbour contracts because he was advised that the naval oil lands in California were being drained by private wells near the rim. Asked by prosecuting counsel who made the contracts, Mr. Denby said: “1 did it, whether 1 wanted to or not.” Mr. Denby declared that he urged President Harding to issue an order transferring the naval reserves to the Interior Department, and that be solicited the co-operation of Secretary Fall in the matter. He added that Fall stated that he had all he could handle, but would be glad to do what lie could.
