NOT ENfUGH WALKING Domition Special. Auckland, December 8. The habit oithc modern school pupil of riding to ad from school in trams in preference > walking was criticised by Dr. E. Roerton at a meeting of the Auckland lrammar Schools Board to-day. “Ther are a great many’ children using th< trams who ought to travel on foot,is ive had to .do in our young days,’ said Dr. Roberton. “Nowadays chdren seem to avoid all kind of effort and prefer to crowd trams even fo: short distances.” The commentarose during discussion on the fares pid on trams by school children. A liter was received from the headmistres of the Girls’ Grammar School stating hat many children attending the Graimar Schools were now required to payfull fare on trams instead of half fre as formerly. . This was as a resul of the rigid enforcement of the Ciz Council by-law stating that all cildren over 15 years should pay fullfares. Formerly’, she stated, all chiliin in the school had been allow-ed at ialf fare. The change was characterise as a hardship on several parents whoiad children attending the schools. Th headmistress requested the board tcapproach the council regarding reduebn in fares for school pupils, and she uoted figures showing that fares were lower in other New Zealand cities.
The chairman (Professor A. P. W. Thomas): The trmway department has had a good deihf expense lately, and I do not think here is any possibility of the board’s epresentations having any' effect. It vs decided to bring the matter before hi council.
