CREDIT OBTAINED BY FRAUD
WOMAN SUCCUMBS TO TEMPTATION Dominion Special. Christchurch, December 9. Weakened by serious illness, with a family of ten and a husband, a railway shunter, earning a moderate wage, Rosina Alary Barlow succumbed to temptation. She was charged in the Magistrate’s Court to-day with obtaining credit from Beath and Company by fraud to the extent of £4 7s. lid. and £4 10s. lid. on two separate occasions. The Magistrate convicted accused and admitted her to probation for twelve months, restoration to be made at the rate of ss. a week. Mr. Cunningham (for accused) asked for the suppression of her name. The Magistrate: Is there much of this sort of thing going on ? Chi.ef-Detective Gibson: Yes, a lot of it. “Then I am afraid I cannot make an order,”, said the Magistrate. “There must be some deterrent to these offences. They are nearly’ always caused through people living beyond their means and trying to keep pace with their friends when they cannot afford it.”
