NOVEL SPANISH INDUSTRY
BREEDING FIGHTING BULLS. The breeding of bulls for their fighting qualities is quite an extensive industry in Spain, according to Mr. Scholefield, who gave an address on “Bull-fighting” at the weekly luncheon of the Rotary Club on Tuesday. About 1500 bulls are required for this purpose yearly, the most suitable types being Aragon or Andelusian breeds, which are a kind of Shorthorn, with horns like Highland cattle. They are branded with a stud brand, and inspected or tried out as yearlings for their fighting propensities. “If they show a lack of spirit,” said Mr. Scholefield, “they are passed up to tlfe bleat Control Board.” (Laughter.) The bulls are weeded out in this manner each year, and by the time thev are ready for the ring they are prettv certain to be fighters when they finally face the matador. The training of the matadors themselves is no haphazard affair. Everv boy who wants to be a real bull-fighter goes to a special school at Madrid, where he gets a certificate, and is sent out as a thoroughly qualified first-class bullfighter. ___________
