WOODVILLE SUMMER MEETING KILFAIRE WINS PRINCIPAL HANDICAP PLAIN SAILING SCORES IN SPRINT EVENT (By Telegraph—From “The Watcher.”) Woodville, December 8... The summer meeting of the Woodville District Jockey Club was opened to-day in sultry weather. Heavy rain fell during the early morning and softened the track, which, however, was in good order for the racing. Kilfaire won the principal handicap from Merry Day and Novar in a very fine finish, the favourite Tanadees being beaten into fourth place. Plain Sailing won the Oete Handicap rather comfortably from Gold Box and Clarinda.
There was a fair attendance, but money was not plentiful, and the totalisator turnover showed a decrease of £4710, compared with the first dav last year, the figures reading £15,319, as against £20,029; favourites failed consistently, and there were some substantial dividends.
MANGA-ATU HURDLES. Peneus was a hot favourite for the hurdles. He flattered his supporters in ( the lead for about six furlongs, when he hit a fence very hard. He then made a very bad jump at the next fence, and although be still held u good position on the home turn it had taken all the steam out of him. Axle made the running after Peneus dropped buck, and was joined on the home turn by Gold Peak, the most prominent of the others being Santonio, Boy, Guruion, and Peneus. Gold Peak and Axle had the finish to themselves, and Axle got home by a head. Gurnion was a moderate third, and Boy, Santonio, Peneus, and Good Mark followed at intervals. Revel was never conspicuous, and the reason was apparent when he returned to the birdcage very lame in front. Santonio ran a very fair race, and might soon improve. Axle gave his supporters a remarkably good return. ■TRIAL PLATE. Kalos was a slightly better favourite than Comedic for the Trial Plate, with Lady Cynthia and Taranto the best backed of the others. Kalos got badly off and stood the leaders up too much to get into the money, but he ■ran a very good fourth. Lady Cynthia was first away, and led practically throughout, although Truney did actually get up with her on the turn. Here Taranto was handy, with Comedic next. In the straight they both challenged, but Lady Cynthia won nicely from Taranto. The latter is a goodlooking four-year-old gelding by King Mark from Marty. It was only his third start, but the support accorded him was justified. Comedic had every chance, but Kalos was very unlucky. WOODVILLE HANDICAP. Tanadees was a solid favourite for the principal handicap, but he was decisively defeated after having every opportunity. Nukumai, Merry Day, and Novar were fairly evenly fancied. Nukumai, who gave trouble at the post, led with Novar through the straight from Merry Day, Tanadees, and Kilfaire. Down the back Nukumai and Novar paired in front of Merry Day and Kilfaire, with Tanadees handy. There was no change till running for the straight, where they closed up. Nukumai was beaten almost as soon as they got in line, Novar hitting the front and being challenged by Kilfaire and Tanadees. A little fHither on Merry Day began to put in her claim, and in a good finish Kilfaire got up to win by a head, while Merry Day finished faster than anything and took second place from Novar in the last stride. Tanadees was about a 1 length away, and then followed Nukumai at the bead of the beaten lot. Tanadees made a great price, for the winner. FLYING HANDICAP. Pop Off and Kilmezzo were the favourites for the hack sprint, despite the fact that they were drawn wide out. Magna Charta delayed the start, and when let go did not get away well, nor did Calluna, Gardant, and Bank Draft. Ladv Ideal shot awav from No. 2, and in a few strides was three lengths clear of the bunch, in which Kilmezzo, Royal Time. Riverna, and Addlepatc were most prominent. Addlepate got a bump at the half-mile post and went bark,, Lady Ideal leading into the ‘•tramkt from Roval Time, Kilmezzo and Riverna. Some of the bunch also moved up when in line, but Ladt Ideal hung on and beat Addlepate, who came on •again, by three parts of a length with Kilmezzo half a length away. Lin Arlington, Royal .Time, Calluna, Hvmestrason, and Riverna were well up. It looked as if Addlepate was a bit unlucky. R'oyal Time is a likely- one to improve very soon. Pop Off was never in a dangerous position, being well back with the race half over. OETE HANDICAP. With Epistle out of the open sprint backers made her stable made Royal Damon favourite by a small total from Plain Sailing. Penman was the best backed of the others Royal Damon was last away from the barrier and never threatened danger. Plain Sailing, Gold Box, and Bonideer began best from Lady Fingers, Penman and Willow Wai. Bonideer, Plain Sailing and Gold Box led into me straght from Penman, Startle, and Clarnda, but Plain Sailing drew clear at the distance and won easing up from Gold Box, although she only beat him half a length. In a close finish for third place there was nothing between Clarinda and Lady Fingers, with Penman, Willow Wai, and Bonideer next. It was the winner’s first start in open company. An inquiry was held into interference with Gold Box on the turn, but it was held to be accidental, and the result of the race unaffected thereby. NURSERY HANDICAP. Chelone was a hot' favourite for the two-year-old handicap, while Mandy and the Lowry bracket were evenly backed. Auratum began slightly better than Chelone and Mandy, and they run thus to the straight where Chelone
1 and Mandy ran up to the leader. Auratum, however, had the best finish left and' won with half a length to spare, while Mandy headed Chelone on the post. Grev Mist was the only other to make a showing. The winner is byAbsurd from Desert Gold, and should not stop at this performance, while Chelone, who was eased after his purchase from Mr. Stead, will no doubt be improved. Mr. Lowry’s other runner, the Australian-bred Silver Grey made no showing at all, running last all the way without any prospects of getting near the field. BOROUGH HANDICAP. Killocra was a very warm favourite for the open Welter Handicap, Polar being the best backed of the others. The favourite made a bold bid for the honours, but failed to catch the lightweight Tongatotoa, who led all the way. Bv the time they reached the half-mile Tongatotoa and Aston were • several lengths clear of the bunch, in which Blonde, Aeriform, Wristlet, and Killocra were the leaders. Aston dropped out on the turn, but Tongatotoa kept going, and although Killocra and Aeriform made heroic efforts his lead was too great to be overcome. Incidentally he paid a substantial price. Killocra’s supporters lost money, and he only just scraped there from Aeriform. Blonde was at an interval well clear of the bunch, which was headed bv Wristlet, Vertigern, Tiega, and Polar. Wristlet was a possibility to the distance, where she dropped out of the contest. WHARITI HANDICAP. Asleep, Panart, and General Wai were verv evenly backed at the head of' the field in the concluding event. General Wai and Polvastra went out clear of the bunch, which was headed by Mint Julep, Mountain Star, Asleep, and Panart. The field closed on the leaders at the turn, where Asleep was done. General Wai led into the straight with Ladykiller, and they were challenged at the distance by Tanart, who came on to cut General Wai out of first place money by half a length. Ladykiller weakened into a fair third, and the rest were well beaten, being headed by Gordon Swift, Mint Julep, and Ardfinuan.
