SHEFFIELD SHIELD MATCHES SOUTH AUSTRALIA BEATS VICTORIA (Rec. December 8, 10.10 p.m.) Adelaide, December 8. In the Sheffield match against Victoria, South Australia, in_ the second innings, made 267 for eight wickets (Rvmill 38, V. Richardson 92, Grimmett 33 not out). Rayson took four wickets for 74. South Australia won by two wickets and three runs, V. Richardson’s splendid innings paving the way to victory. The weathet was fine and the wicket still good. The South Australians fought hard to win, and in the first few' overs batted carefully. Then V. Richardson and Rj’niill commenced to open out, but a little later Rymill was caught. With only the tail left Richardson tightened his defence, as only 44 runs were required, and the scoring slowed down. After Richardson went out the scoring became still slower, the last three winning runs taking ten minutes. QUEENSLAND v. NEW SOUTH WALES DREARY BATTING. (Rec. December 8, 10.10 p.m.) Sydney, December 8. In the Sheffield Shield match between Queensland and New South Wales, Queensland had made 323 ,for six wickets (L. Oxenhsm 60, Thompson 43, O’Connor 103, Rowe 35 not out), and stumps were drawn. The match was continued in ideal weather, on a good wicket, but the batting of the visitors was very dreary. They played dogged cricket, defying the attack, and scoring mainly by singles. The batsmen, refusing to take risks, scored only off loose ones. Oxenliam took over three hours to compile his score. When' Thompson appeared the scoring rate livened up, but after lie was dismissed it dropped back, most of the balls being blocked. All changes in the bowling failed to tempt the visitors to take chances. [New South Wales’s first innings score was 287.]
