“IN HIS BLOOD TO STEAL”

YOUNG THIEF PLACED UNDER RESTRAINT Dominion Special. Auckland, December 8. Having previously pleaded guilty to the theft of two overcoats, of a total value of £l2, John Thomas Brown (21 years of age) appeared for sentence in the Magistrate’s Court to-day. The Magistrate (Mr. Hunt) remarked on perusing accused’s list that Brown had four previous convictions for theft. Mr. Matthews stated that Brown had been under tlie Government charge for 14 years, although only 21. He had a weakness, and it was doubtful whether a further period of detention would be of anv benefit to him. Instead of sending accused to a Borstal institution, as the probation officer suggested, counsel thought that Brown should be sentenced to a short term so that lie would be out for Christmas. “I atn sure that the Court cannot reform Brown, and possiblv the onlv course to adopt would be to deal with him on charges that he might appear on later,” said Air. Alatthews. , Mr. Hunt: Yes, but lie is a thief. It is evidently in his blood to steal. Accused cannot be allowed at large to commit further thefts. . . Brown was ordered to be detained tn a Borstal institute for a period not exceeding two years.
