WHITEWASH
An approved recipe for whitewash: “First melt l|lb. of best size in half a gallon of water made warm but not too hot. In a pail mix 3flb. of best whiting and {lb. of zinc white with water, bringing to the consistency of gruel. Into this squeeze a little blue from the washerwoman’s bluebag until the tint is as desired; remember the wash looks whiter when spread on the ceiling. When well mixed, add the size water and stir well together. “This wash covers well and needs spreading thinlv. Do not use a large brush. An ordinary distemper brush is best, and can be more rapidly manipulated, which is important with this wash. Start in a corner near a window Do a small patch at a time as quickly as possible, keeping the edges moist, and working from them in each fresh portion. A wet or humid evening is the best time to apply, using as little artificial light as possible. Have no fire in the room until the whole ceiling ’is finished.”
