HULK NEARLY SUNK
By Telegraph.—press association Gisborne, December 4. The hulk ifonowai, which is being prepared for sinking shortly as a protective breakwater, was nearly prematurely sunk yesterday just prior to knocking-off time. A P'nfp dropped and broke the seacock. The vessel was lying five miles from port, and assistance was immediately sent. A gang worked continuously until 4.3 U this morning, a series of pumps being used to keep the water down nil the repairs were effected. The vessel is now safe. ' Had she sunk, salvage would have been impossible, as only tne bare shell remains and is loaded with stone. Heavy seas were running, and the harbour launch, which went out yesterday, was unable to return till to-day. Other shipping was interfered with, and forty, feet of the retaining wall at the mouth of the river diversion was demolished, phirther damage of o minor nature was also reported.
