SWIMMING
WELLINGTON CENTRE CARNIVAL GOOD COMPETITION The opening carnival of the season of the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association was held at the Te Aro Baths on Saturday. I’he afternoon was pleasant and the attendance of the public very good, but the water was extremely cold after the recent cool snap, and the polo event at the end of the card was put off, the swimmers having had as much as was good' for their health by that time. Considering it was the first carnival of the season, the fixture was very well managed and the events were got off with reasonable promptitude. That the handicapping was good was evident from the close finishes witnessed, and the class of both swimming and diving was of a high standard, some good times being recorded in the former events. The novelty events were entertaining, though more could have been made of these than was the case. The diving exhibition bf Messrs W. Hicks (ex-New Zealand champion), Hedlard Cameron. Watson and Griffin was very good, some of their fancy tumbling including somersaults, swallow, sand-pike, Charlie'Chaplin .splosh, double dives and a troupe dive' It was announced at the conclusion of the sports that another carnival would be held in a fortnight’s time.
