“NO OVERTIME” STRIKE

WATERSIDERS DEFY JUDGE BEEBY COMPLETE STALEMATE REACHED Br Telegraph.—press association. Copyright (Rec. December 1, 9.55 p.m.) Melbourne, December I. The Waterside Workers’ Federation defied Judge Beeby, and declined to end the overtime strike. 1 his decision has led to a complete stalemate in the dispute. MINISTER INTERVENES IN CRANE-DRIVERS’ STRIKE CONFERENCE OF PARTIES ARRANGED Sydney, December 1. As the result* of intervention by the Minister of Labour and Industries (Mr J. M. Baddeley), negotiations for the settlement of the crane drivers strike have been reopened. Mr. Baddeley met representatives of the crane drivers, and then representatives of the Railway Commissioners. He afterwards attended a conference of both parties. A proposal was submitted to the Minister by the Commissioners, and after discussion it was decided by the crane drivers to submit the proposal to a mass meeting of strikers at Newcastle. Should the strike continue for a week 15,000 miners will be forced out of employment, together with seamen employed in colliers. Many union officials believe that the strike will be a short one. \bey contend that the strike would lead to such dislocation of shipping and mining as to break down under its own weight. ) Among the vessels held up at Newcastle are the Rona, the Ihumata, and the Whaugape.

Melbourne, December 1. As a result of the Newcastle crane drivers’ strike 500 men employed by the Melbourne Harbour Trust on dredges and tugs have been given a week’s notice. Unless the trouble is overcome in the meantime they will cease work on Saturday. OUTLOOK BRIGHTER (Rec. December 1, 10.40 p.m.) Sydney, December 1. Although the meeting of Newcastle crane drivers has not definitely settled the strike, the outlook is considerably brighter. The meeting appointed a deputation to wait on Air. Baddeley to-morrow, and it is anticipated that work will be resumed in a few days. There are now twenty-five collieries idle. YALLOURN STRIKE ENGINE-DRIVERS CONTINUE TO WORK. Melbourne, December 1. The engine-drivers and firemen employed at the main powerhouse decided to adjourn consideration of a proposal that they should join the Yalfourn strikers. The position is still very serious, but while the engine-drivers refuse to join the strike, it will be possible for normal supplies to be maintained for about three weeks. [Eight hundred employees of the State Electricity Commission at Yallourn struck, demanding a 44 hours’ week.]
