INVITATION RECITALS
MISS KENNY’S PUPILS. The pupil- of Miss Mildred Kenny presented novel entertainment at an invitation reciial held in St. John’s Hall last night It is not often that an entire programme is given by stringed instruments alone especially such instruments as the banjo, mandolin, steel guitar and ukulele, ’but that his ian be clone 'successfully was proved, A largo audience attended and received each number, enthusiastically. The first ikm was the "'Cromartie Polka March,” by the'banjo and mandolin bands, followed by a dreamy Hawaiian melody, “For-get-me-not, My Waikiki Mermaid,” by the guitar band, the "Hettie Waltz,” played very .brightly by the mandolin band, the “Darkie’s Dream,” by the banjo band. Four popular dauce tunes, “Always” and f’Horses,” by the mandolin trio, and "Yearning” and “Barney Google,” by the tenor banjo band, completed the first part of the'programme. The “Golden Song,” by the mandolin band, ‘One, Two. Three, Four,” and “Poor Old Joe,” by the guitar band, a medley of well-known negro melodies by the banjo band, "Greetings Waltz,” particularly well played by the mandolin band, and “Coontown Breezes,” by the banjo band, completed a most enjoyable entertainment. Those taking part were Messrs. A. A. Leach, S. T. ’ones. C. Renner, R. H. Planner, J. W. M. Harrison, A. R. Foley, Trail, Cross, Boyd, C. Soal, Mesdames R. B. bind, A. O. Leach. J. H. Brown, and J. Jackson,' Misses M. Peterson, Benn, Strong, Chivers, Escott, G. Hookey, M. Munro, S. Raker, and Pryce, and Masters K. Planner and Gordon Hall.
' MISSES ROWE AND BENNETT. There was some very good, solo work at an invitation recital held in the Art Gallery, Whitmore Street, last night, wnen Miss Phyllis Rowe and Mies Eileen Bennett, two pupils of Miss Valerie Corliss, exhibited their skill as pianists. The first, item was a rendering of Cesar Franck’s Prelude, Ana et Final in E Major; this, ■ as Each’s Prelude and Fugue in B which followed, was very well plaved by Miss Bennett. Miss Rowe played Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in • G minor, followed by two preludes of Blumenfield. Two more preludes by the same composer were played by Miss Bennett, and Miss Rowe brought lite first half of the programme to a conclusion with her rendering of the first movement from Schumann’s Fantasia in C. The first section of the second half of the programme was devoted to three items by Mi’s Rowe, John Ireland’s "Island Spell,” Arnold Bax’s “Hill Tune,” and Leo Livens’s “Peter Piper.” Miss Bennett very enjoyable renderings of selected works of six different composers, Livens, Parry, Ireland, Scriabina, Debussy, and Cervantes. The programme was brought to a pleasant conclusion by Miss Bennett playing an Impromptu and a Polonaise’of Chopin, and by Miss Rowe giving a rendering of Chopin's Scherzo in B minor.
