Port Nicholson Sea Troop maintains a good attendance, and badge tests will be taken when the boating season opens. .This troop has one 27tt. sailing whaler, fully equipped with mast and sails, and is very useful, but heavy to pull. A new kauri-timbered 20ft. combined pulling and sailing boat, especially designed by Messrs. Petersen and McCallum (members of the committee), assisted by the D.S.M., is now ready. Thanks are due to'the chairman, Mr. W. A. Dutch, and committee for making it possible to obtain the boat. Being sft. 9in. beam, moulded depth 2ft.-Gin., with live thwarts, fitted with centreboard, and (later) I’apara. sails, , it should develop speed. Ten Scouts can thus pull together. The cruising yacht lent by Mr. Smith, of Ngaio, has been overhauled and kept trim during the winter. During the winter the boys and mates have built a "ft. dinghy for use in the boat ; harbour at a cost of 30s. Besides its usefulness the boys learned something of woodwork, use of tools, and caulking. , „ ■ Collingwood (St. Peter's Mission; H“a I loop lias had its clothing smartened up with regulation lettering cn the jer•bys, woiked by the jadics of the committee. One 18ft. open boat, sate, but heavy for the boys to pull, is always available. The 23ft. boat loaned, has been recalled by the owners. Besides the usual inland camp held by St. Peter’s Mission, this troop put in a week-end camp at Lowry Bay. The troop committee attend well and give support the Sea Scoutmaster Mr. .1. 11. Scott. Another boat is urgently required, and it is intended that the more fortunate Port Nicholson Troop will during the boating season help Collingwood to gain more sen-water experience. The District Commissioner has been in communication with boat clubs at Petone and Plimmerton, and it is 'oned that this season troops will he added. Khandallah Troop is still going strong, although news from them is not very frequent. They are at present working on second-class work that Scouts going to camp will he able to pass their tot while there. Sixteen of the Scouts and Scoutmaster are combining with I’elone St. Augustine’s Troop for the Christina' camp. A concert was held last Tues day, given by the Petone Benefit Entertainers in aid of camp and general funds. During the interval an investiture ceremony was carried out, when ■Tack Schierning entered the great brotherhood. In the absence of Sir Alfred Robin, Commissioner, the Rev R. Watson, one of the troop committee, thanked the company for the splendid programme. He also spoke of the principles of Scouting, and the need f or more instructors, after which ho presented S. M. Reynolds with his ten year service star. On Friday last District Scoutmaster Nelson paid a surprise visit, and in consequence was in time to present’Patrol Leader Hill with the troop flag. The winners, the Kakakos.- have the highest average for attendance, dress and behaviour for the past three months. This is the second occasion that the Kakakos have been successful, hut it is thought that the Kakakos will taka the laurels next quarter. The Terrace Troop continues making great progress, and Tuesday of last week they received an official visit from members of the Rotary Club Mr. J. R. McKenzie was the visitor, and the Rev. E. R. Weeks was also present. After watching them work and nlav, supper, very kindly provided by the Rotarians, was thoroughly enjoyed. As is always the case on flic oecn«ion of thosp visit? from the Rotary Club, everybody had a i.-lb time. Mr. H. A. Hahin has been appointed ns secretary to the Wellington local Boy Scouts’ Association, vice Mr E. Lawson, who resigned. The secretary’s headnuarters will be in the "Den,” above Armit’s Buildings. Lambton Quay. On November 14 last, the Brooklyn Troop held a successful church parade at Pt Matthew’s Cbnrvh dm-ing -whirl, the Union Jack and New Zealand Ensign were dedicated by the Vicar. Rey. Oompton. The sermon was entirely for
the scouts and wolf clubs, and concerned the flags which compose the Lmon .lack. St. Augustine’s Petone and Lower Hutt troops will hold a parade at _the Anglican Boys’ Home on Saturday afternoon, December 4. It is hoped soon to form troops in connection with the institution. Parents are invited to attend the rally, which is on the sanio day as the annual gift day. The Petone scouts’ band propose td parade with the East Harbour troop on tlie occasion of their next church parade, on December 5. The Christmas camp will bo held at St Albans. Wninui. and the Lower Hutt troop will enmp nt Akatarawa during the .holidays. St. Cuthbert’s troop, which is still working well, is now mnkin<» active preparation for their Christmas camp, which ia to be held. at Paekakariki. A iumbie sale will be held on December 17. and the troop will be thankful to receive from anyone, clothing, or goods for sale.
