Carterton, November 30. The annual prize-giving ceremony at the Hikurangi College, Clarence, loos place last uigiit, the principal, Mr. K. it. Ward, Al. A., presluing over a large attendance of parents ano friends of tue school. Before presentin o the prizes the principal referred to the good work accomplislied during the year, aud outlined a very amoitious programme loi the coming year. Now that the college grounds had been extended, it was hoped that more commodious buildings could be provided so that the secondary classes could be developed. Lt was proposed that agricultural instruction be the feature of the secondary training. Supper was provided, and the Rev. \v. Raine, vicar of St. Mark's Church, Carterton, expressed thanks to the visitors for thei.’ interest iu the work of the school. A very enjoyable programme of musical and elocutionary items was given by the boys-. On Friday afternoon a garden party will be held in St. Mark's Vicarage grounds, Carterton, under the auspices of the Ladies’ Guild. A branch of the Girl Guides has been formed in Carterton, and the following officers elected: —President. Mrs. Al. B. Tweed; vice-presidents. Mesdames L. Aplin, W. Raine, and Miss Khaw; chairman of executive committee, the District Commissioner; vice-ch airman, Mrs. W. 8. Shirtcliffe; secretary, Mrs. Raine; treasurer, Mrs. P. A. Cole; committee, Mesdames Hawkins, Barons, Wiltou, J. McKenzie, Smart, Roydhouse, Steel, G. Reynolds, Dunn, Wilkins, Tyler. Ken 11, Davidson, Tucker, Stringer, Jackson, Bannin, Neich. Bredin. Misses Shaw, King, aud Fisher. The subscription was fixed at 2s. 6d. per annum. Members, after giving the threefold promise of the Guide by-laws, became members of the Guide Sisterhood, and are entitled to wear the silver badge of the association. On the eve of his departure for I’limmerton on transfer, the staff of the Carterton fiost-office presented Mr. Al. Corlett with a travelling trunk. A confirmation service was conducted by Archbishop O’Shea at St. Mary's Church, Carterton on Sunday, About 50 candidates from the South Wairarapa were presented. Mv. Department's curiculuni committee-r Department’s curriculum representing all sections of education, which will be called upon to overhaul the syllabi of the Dominion schools, and adjust them more practically to modern needs. At a meeting of the Central Coiumitlee of the South Wairarapa branch of the Plunket. Society, it. was decided that the Featherston branch should collect money to contribute towards the proposed fund to erect a marble bust of the lale Mrs. Thcomin, which is io be placed in the Kariiane Home to commemorate her efforts on behalf of the socictv. It was agreed that Featherston .-onlri'lv.ifc .212 toward’ a fund for the Lady Tiuby King Fellowship attached to the Otago Medical School. The Featherston post office staff presented Mr. C- Hoimhton with a set of military hnir brushes ns a token of esteem upon the occasion of his departure for Wellington on transfer.
