HAWKE CUP CONTEST WANGANUI MEET TARA- ' NAKI TO-DAY ' •• , The first Hawke Cup match of. the season will commence at Wanganui today between Wanganui (holders) ana Taranaki. Wanganui will be represented by the iollowing strong eleven:— E. H. L. Bernau, S. Harris, R. W. Orton, U. G. Williams, L. A. Wood, F. U. Hutchison, C. F. Treadwell, C. S. Dempster, J. Kerr, G. Orr, and C« A. Holland. . . On Tuesday a team comprising members of the Legal profession in Wellington visited Wanganui, and played a match against a Wanganui eleven. The Wellington team was mainly composed of colts, but included two senior players in A. Ji. Boilings and A. M. Cousins. The Wanganui side included several of the Hawke Cup team, who took opportunity to get, in some practice for to-day’s match with Taranaki. The game on Tuesday ended in a comfortable win for Wanganui. Cousins, who reached 30, top-scored for Wellington, who were dismissed for a modest total. When Wanganui went to the wickets Dempster commenced to score freely, but was clean bowled by Cousins before he had gone far. Bernau, however, got going in his best style and hit up a century in about an hour. When Wanganui had got well past the visitors* total rain put a stop to play. The Wanganui cricketers can scarcely be called enthusiastic, as the Wellington team had to supply two substitutes for them in the field.

The third and fourth-class fixtures, as drawn for last Saturday, will bo played on Saturday, with the exception of the following alteration of groundThird'A; Y.M.C.A. B v. Y.M.C.A. A. Newtown No. 7.

Christchurch, December 1. At a meeting of the New Zealand Cricket Council to-night, Messrs. Williams (Otago), Patrick (Canterbury) and Brice (Wellington), wrote accepting the position of selectors of the team to go Home. Mr. Patrick was appointed convener and is to be instructed that one or more should see the minor associations and Hawke Cup matches. It was agreed to suggest to the selectors that a maximum number of eight certainties be chosen by the middle of January. A letter was received from Wellington, urging that the manager be appointed at the earliest possible moment. It was decided to reply that an endeavour would be made to announce the manager bv Christmas, and that in the meantime the council was concentrating on the financial aspect of the tour, snares for which were coming in freely. Nominations were received from several minor associations of players to participate in the match against Wellington on December 21 and 22. . At a meeting of New Zealand Cricket Ltd., it was decided that as more than the minimum number .of shares. (3000) had been subscribed, the company go to allotment. Regarding the proposed match between Wellington and the minor associations on December 21 and 22, it was stated that with one exception all the associations had agreed with the terms of the proposals for the selection. The following nominations from minor associations were received:—Badeley. Hawke, Going, and Everest (Waikato), Lowry, Worker, and Stephenson (Hawke’s Bay), Hope and Gallichan (Manawatu), Scholium and Robertson (Poverty Bay), Franklin (Waiapu), Kingston and Lash (Taranaki), Griffith' (Buller), Neale, Eden and Newman (Nelson). A letter from the Auckland Association notifying the .inclusion of Bowley, the professional coach, in the Plunket Shield matches was received.

The Canterbury Cricket Association, has agreed that the Canterbury-Wel-lington match shall begin on January 1.

PRESS COMPETITION. The following will represent, the Dominion against the "Times,” at Kelbnrn Park on Saturday: Gibson Greig, Coleman, Boyle, Bell, Sando, Dind, Howatt, Jouriiet, Coffey, and Hart.
