THE RACING WORLD
CONCLUSION OF FEILDING MEETING ST. ANDREW’S HANDICAP WON BY GLENROSf ROYAL DAMON SCORES IN SPRINT EVENT (By Telegraph—From “The Watcher.”) Feilding, December 1. The spring meeting of the Feilding Jockey Club was concluded to-day in unfavourable weather, heavy showers falling during the latter part of the programme. At the start of the racing the track was exceedingly heavy as the result of a downpour overnight, and the further rain rendered it a quagmire. The weather also spoilt the attendance. The St. Andrew’s Handicap was won easily by the favourite Glenross from Joy Bird and Merry Day. Royal Damon won the sprint from Nine of Spades and First Acre.
A substantial decrease in totahsator returns was only to be expected, and the figures for the day were £17,664, as compared with £27,556 for the second day last year. Tl(is made £38,400 for the meeting, a decrease, of £17,615 on last year’s spring meeting. The only untoward incident in the running was the falling of Takaroa in the Maiden Race. He fell in precisely the same spot as he did the first day, and a further coincidence .was that he again brought.down another runner, Elicit. The jockeys R. J. Mackie and N. Trillo were unhurt. CHELTENHAM HURDLES. Enare was scratched for the hurdles, and in the five-horse field Koauau was a red-hot favourite. Sir Pam went to the front, and at one stage looked as if he might stay there. Koauau went up, however, on the home turn and joined him over the last hurdle, and beat him home decisively. The other trio were well beaten. Gurnion’s rider lost an iron after going half a mile. NOVICE STAKES. Powhiri and Molto were equal favourites for the maiden race from Petal, but the dividends were paid by outsiders. Truney led from Eka, Molto, and Lady Cynthia, but was done at the entrance’ to the straight, where Eka shot out. Although strongly challenged by Lady Cynthia, she just held her own at the post. Molto was a poo rthird, and the rest were well beaten. Takaroa fell on the home turn and brought down Elicit. No damage resulted. ■ST. ANDREW’S HANDICAP. In spite of Glenross’s failure the first day, he was installed a better favourite than Hipo for the St Andrew’s Handicap in an even betting race. Prior to the start, Joy Bird bolted a mile before she could be pulled tip, and at the post she lashed out freely. Glenross was ridden a different race from his Cup run, being allowed to stride along all the way. with the result that he led throughout and won decisively. In the early stages Kilfaire and Glengariff, with Joy Bird and Hipo, were his nearest attendants, Indian Sage, who got left at the start, being in Hie rear with Merrv . Dav. Glenross could not be .reached in . the run home, Joy Bird staving well into second place, although she would have lost it in another few strides to the fast-finishing Merry Day. Considering what Joy Bird took out of herself prior to the contest, she ran a good race. OROUA NURSERY. Ruanui was a hot favourite for the two-year-old handicap, Tom Bracken and Panther being the best supported of the others. In the birdcage Insulation reared and fell, his rider, P. Burgess. luckily escaping from receiving the full weight of the horse. Insulation also gave trouble at the pbst and delayed the start. When let go, Thaw was completely left, Tom Bracken going out from Ruanui, Oscillation, and Panther. Approaching the straight Tom Bracken ran out and took Ruanui with him, Silvermine slipping up on the rails, to win. very decisively from Ruanui, with Tom Bracken a moderate third and the rest well beaten. The winner is the first of the progeny of that good mare Silver Link to race, and, being by Catmint, he. sustained the family reputation of being able to gallop in bad ground, Ruanui was unlucky carried out by Tom Bracken, but the winner is a pretty fair sort, and iv looked as if he would have won in any case. NIKAU HANDICAP. Heavy rain set in just prior to the Nikau Handicap, in which several were very evenly backed, the favourites being Sovena, Cerf and Merle. Tip Tree got chopped out at the start. Volplane and Sovena showing out from Quillfire and Merle. Quillfire dropped back in the first furlong, the order of the leaders being unchanged to the straight, where Merle drew up inside Sovena. In a strenuous tussle Sovena prevailed. Volplane was a poor third, and the somewhat unlucky Tip Tree headed the bunch.
COLYTON HANDICAP. Three of the runners in the Colyton Handicap, the field for which was reduced to six, were evenly backed, Gold Box being a slightly better favourite than Inferno and Royal Damon Gold Box, Nine of Spades and First Acre ran in close order from the others to the turn, where Royal Damon began to close up. Nine of Spades led for home first, but Roval Damon soon settled his pretensions and scored a hollow victory. First Acre was a poor third, just in front of Gold Box. Inferno was in trouble all the way. RONGOTEA HANDICAP. —Elysianor was favourite for the Rongotea Handicap, but although well placed on the home turn, he failed to stay. Seastar was the pacemaker from Conviction, Resinous and Lady Anstruther. Resinous led into the straight, but Lady Anstruther defeated him comfortably. Elysianor was a poor third, with the rest at intervals. EMPIRE HANDICAP. Monaghan was favourite for the concluding" event from Alaric, but several others were well backed. Peneus began best and led ' l, ’t from Kilmiss, Monaghan and Bonogne. This was tlie order for a couple of furlongs, where Monaghan went to the front. He led Petieus, Kilmiss and Bonogne into the straight and cantered home the easiest winner from Peneus, who oustaved Bonogne. Aeriform came well into fourth place just ahead of Kilmiss and Alaric. TAKAPUNA MEETING PRINCESS RONNIE WINS ST. ANDREW’S HANDICAP CAUTLEY HANDICAP TO RUFFLES Dominion Special. Auckland, December 1. The spring meeting of the Takapuna Jockey Club concluded to-day in beautiful weather. The course was holding during the early part of the programme, but dried considerably as the day progressed. Flags were erected ■at the tun into the, straight to keep the horses off new ground that had been included in the course proper as a result of the recent alterations, which had cut up badly on the first day. During the big race one of the small poles carrying a flag was broken by one ol the horses and a piece of the wood shot up and struck Boomerday in the eye, with the result that the eve was knocked out. The attendance was good, though there was a further falling off in the «• talisator receipts, which totalled £-10,357 10s., compared with £-16,508 on rhe corresponding day last year. The grand total for the meeting .was £82,806 10s., against £108,926 10s. last year. VAUXHALL HANDICAP. Quondong and Luxurious were the only scratchings for the Vauxhall Handicap, and the bracket. Bahama and Waitekohe carried about £l2O more than Cantab, while Arch Queen was next fancied. At . the five furlongs post Bahama had a slight advantage from . Kyngzoue, Cantab, Harbour View, Te Kawan'a, and Bold Front. A furlong further on Kyngzone had lost his position, and Cantab was up with Bahama in the lead, with Harbour View, Abbey Day, and le Kawana following. Bahama continued on in front with Cantab, the former leading into the straight, where Abbey Dav was running third, followed by Harbour View, while Anolo was putting in a good run. Bahama held his own in the run home, and won by one and a half lengths from Anolo, with Harbour View two lengths away. Waitekohe was fourth, followed by Cantab, Queen Rewa, Bold Front, and Abbey' Day.
high-weight handicap. Pouri and Hangawera declined their engagements in the Kawau High-weight Handicap, leaving a field of seven. Royal Form was about £350 better backed than Passionate, with Black Cruiser next in demand. Turning out of the straight, Kamehameha drew out from Pentagram and Fair Abbey, but there was not much between them at the half mile, where the four others were bunched close handy Royal Form then moved off and was alongside Kamehameha when the latter was approaching the straight Royal Form was the first to turn for home from Fair Abbey and Kamehameha and easily holding bis own the favourite went on to win by three-quarters of a length from Fair Abbey • and Kameliameba who dead-heated for second place. Sea Comet was fourth, followed by Black Cruiser and Pentagram, with Passionate last. STANLEY HANDICAP. In the Stanley Handicap, for which Delightment and Adjuster were scratched, Archeno was made a good favourite, £l5O better than Maveelish, while Newbury was next sought after. Maveelish was quick on the way, and with a furlong covered was leading Judge’s Box and Bizarro. Approaching the half-mile Judge’s Box fell and Bizarro ran into the lead from Luxurious. Maveelish, Newbury, and Archeno Blue Sky being a long way back last. Archeno then improved her position and was second to Bizarro as they started to run across the top. Before the straight was reached Archeno had drawn well clear, and led into the straight from Luxurious, Maveelish, and Valkon. Archeno then went on to win verv easily by two lengths from Maveelish, with Luxurious a short head away. Valkon was fourth. Bizarro next, and Blue Sky last. CAUTLEY HANDICAP. Crossing the top Ruffles moved up behind Archeen and Tutankhamen, who were leading, King Merv being in fourth place and Nancy Lee next. Archeen turned into the straight first, but Ruffles then came through, and quickly gathering the leader he went on to win easilv by two lengths from King Merv, with Archeen three-quarters of a length away. When the barrier rose, Nippy and Mosaic lost several lengths. , Princess Ronnie led past the stand, but was then headed by Charlady, and the latter turned into the back straight just clear of Queen Arch, Princess Ronnie, Aurmnavis, and Transformer. The favourite, Ruapapa, was well back, with only three horses behind him. Charlady continued to show the way to Princess Ronnie and Aurmnavis past the six, five, and four-furlong posts, where Mosaic, Queen Arch, and Master Doon were nicely placed behind the leading division Coming across the top to the straight, Princess Ronnie headed Charlady, and she was the first to turn for home, while Aurmnavis was alongside Charlady, and Ruapapa was making a forward move. Nothing had a chance with Princess Ronnie in the run to the judge, and she won well by a length from the favourite, who finished strongly, and beat Charlady by half a length for second place. Aurmnavis was fourth, followed by Mosaic, Master Doon, Nippy, and Transformer.
