HARBOUR DREDGE

LYTTELTON BOARD DEFERS PURCHASE. Dominion Special. Christchurch, December 1. 'The purchase of a new dredge, at an estimated cost of £120,000, was i-ecom-mended by the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s engineer at the meeting to-day. He suggested a dredge which could be take nto sea, and the spoil deposited there at the same cost as the present dredge could when pumping into the reclamation areas. _ There was a great divergence of opinion among members on the matter. It was stated that the present dredge could be worked two shifts, instead of one,’ that. Hie time was not opportune for the raising of large sums of money, that spoil from the harbour should be used for reclamation ■work instead of being carted out to sea, and that the present depth of the harbour was sufficient to accommodate nil vessels. The board' decided to defer the matter two years.
