AUSTRALIAN WINES

EXPORT IN BULK RECOMMENDED London, November 30. Arising out of the Australian wine lunch, M. Andres Simon, who is recognised as the world’s greatest expert, told the Australian Press Agency that the Commonwealth is producing nice light red and white wine, but the fact that it is shipped in bottles made its cost double the price of those of France, Spain, and Italy, and therefore was not a commercial proposition. Furthermore, people would not pay a high price for bottled Australian, even if the European wines were taxed out of existence. Beverage wine was not to be sipped in thimblefuls, but in tumblerfuls, so the price must be low. The only possibility of commercial success was bulk shipment. Australia’s brightest chance lay in sweet wines of high alcoholic strength, for which there was a growing demand among people who would not pay high prices for spirits.
